This role is based on Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

You will report to Island Recreation Manager

Responsibilities:

• Oversee the development, execution and tracking of all individual development plans, mentoring assignments, structured shadowing experiences and stretch assignments for all Beach Lifeguard in Training, Beach Lifeguard and Beach Lifeguard Coordinator roles
• Conduct detailed needs assessments and gap analyses related to operational performance, lifeguard certification standards, succession planning, understudy development and external apprentice program engagement; organize and execute appropriate methods of training
• Audit and assess all training and certification needs; leverage key metrics and data to inform operational readiness, compliance, and developmental milestones; identify key trends and formulate detailed reporting, analysis and recommendations to Island Recreation leadership on a weekly basis
• Evaluate Beach Lifeguard and Beach Lifeguard in Training development performance, conduct weekly leadership meetings and verify strong operational and safety certification standards knowledge of the Beach Lifeguard Crew overall
• Primary liaison with outside training vendors, community partners and other stakeholders for lifeguard apprentice training throughout the Bahamas
• Partner with Island Leadership to support Guest service/soft-skills training for other teams, as needed​​​​​​
• Create and conduct operational assessments and monitor results
• Hold Island Recreation leaders accountable and challenge thinking to ensure the overall training and development strategy is executed
• Complies with the safety competencies, and all company policies and procedures

Basic Qualifications:

• Legally authorized to work in the Bahamas
• Minimum three years (current or previous) Leadership of teams and learning & development experience in a recreation and or lifeguard team, with procedures at a beach resort facility
• Previous experience with instructional design, adult learning principles or related experience
• Strong knowledge of the Lifeguard industry and certification standards
• Ability to pass a pre-hire swim test and successfully complete lifeguard certification training as well as Aquatic Rescue Professional certification (conducted upon arrival on island), including swimming 200 yards with the first 100 yards in one minute and 50 seconds or less; treading water for two minutes without the use of hands, retrieving a ten-pound brick from eight feet of water; certification requirements must also be maintained throughout contract
• Ability to successfully complete the lifeguard instructor training course
• Strong swimming ability; ability to maintain high level of fitness throughout each contract
• Must be able to observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
• Ability to pass a vision screening with at least 20/25 vision, corrected or uncorrected
• Ability to detect and respond to noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility
• Ability to remain calm and focused in emergency situations
• Ability to exercise good judgment, serve as a role model for others, demonstrate and proactively carry out Disney’s Leadership Guiding Principles, work independently, adapt to change and be solution-oriented
• Strong verbal & written communication skills; ability to exercise an authoritative approach with Guests when necessary to ensure overall safety, when needed
• Demonstrated ability to communicate with all levels of leadership (island, shipboard and shore side)
• Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
• Effective organizational and time management skills
• Proficiency in common Windows computer applications and e-mail
• Ability to lift 40-50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience with boats, snorkel equipment, or other recreational equipment• Open water diver and diving rescue certification

This role is based on Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

  • Be receptive to island life – living and working on a remote island
  • Be willing to follow and perform safety role, emergency responsibilities and associated responsibilities as specified in the Island Safety Plan
  • Be willing to be appreciative of working and living in a multi-cultural environment
  • If applicable, be willing to share a confined cabin with other crew members and appreciative of working and living in a multicultural environment that has strict rules and regulations

  • Obtain a criminal background check
  • Bring approved work shoes

Disney Cruise Line is a drug-free workplace. All new hires are required to undergo drug/alcohol testing within the first week upon arriving on the island and throughout their contracts. Failure to pass the drug/alcohol testing will result in immediate termination.
