Job Summary:

The Disney Corporate Legal IP Department, Copyright & Trademark group is seeking highly qualified candidates for a position as Associate Principal Counsel to advise on social media matters and advise its businesses on trademark, right of publicity and copyright issues.

The position will be responsible for analyzing, advising in the field of social media, including transactional work, as well as performing IP analysis and providing advice on trademark, right of publicity and copyright analysis and clearances related to the production, marketing and distribution of motion pictures, television and streaming content, games and related consumer products.

Responsibilities:

  • Spotting, analyzing and advising on social media and platform issues, including working with businesses and other subject matter experts (e.g., privacy, music), including advising on best practices and handling transactional matters.
  • Undertake analysis and clearance, and provide counseling to clients on numerous intellectual property matters, including trademark, copyright, and right of publicity issues.
  • Management of trademark filing programs; clearances; opposition practice; working with in-house trademark paralegal staff, working closely with colleagues and counsel in the US and other countries.
  • Analyze and advise on complex rights questions.
  • Analyze and resolve intellectual property claims.
  • Advise on IP aspects of transactions and legal agreements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6+ years of IP experience (transactional or litigation) with a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
  • Experience handling copyright, trademark and right of publicity issues.• Strong understanding of digital and web-based IP issues.
  • Familiarity with social media and other content applications and platforms.
  • Knowledge of First Amendment and fair use issues as related to intellectual property law.
  • Experience working with paralegals.
  • Experience giving presentations and public speaking. This position involves educating business units on intellectual property and social media topics from time to time.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate risk; exercise sound legal judgment; and advise business executives and other attorneys on IP issues.
  • Ability to work independently but with supervision from senior attorney(s) as needed.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work quickly, efficiently, and collaboratively under multiple, high-priority deadlines.
  • A collegial and collaborative lawyer who is committed to delivering outstanding results for his or her clients and The Walt Disney Company while building a positive working environment with clients and colleagues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate complex concepts and practical issues effectively with all levels of management, as well as a knack for smooth client relationships and diplomatic, creative resolution of conflicting needs.
  • Excellent work ethic and interpersonal skills, including a healthy sense of humor and the ability to build professional, interdepartmental relationships at multiple levels.
  • Adaptability to changes in workflow and intellectual property related support systems and technology is critical.
  • Admission to California State Bar or willingness and qualification to be Registered In-House Counsel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience at a large law firm.
  • Experience representing a major consumer brand or entertainment IP owner.
  • Technology-forward attorney who is unafraid of technological advancements in the intellectual property portfolio and workflow management systems.
