Onyx Collective is a new content brand formed under Disney General Entertainment (DGE) designed to curate a slate of premium entertainment programming by creators of color and underrepresented voices. Onyx Collective ushers an exciting slate of content for a global audience, including critically acclaimed debut project Questlove’s Oscar®-winning documentary “Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)”; “The Hair Tales,” from executive producers Tracee Ellis Ross, Michaela Angela Davis and Oprah Winfrey; legal drama “Reasonable Doubt,” from executive producers Raamla Mohamed, Kerry Washington and Larry Wilmore; limited series “The Plot,” executive produced and starring two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali; and award-winning documentary, “Aftershock,” from directors Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee. The brand’s roster of prolific creators also includes writer and comedian Natasha Rothwell (“Insecure,” “SNL”), writer, producer and director Prentice Penny’s Penny for Your Thoughts, Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media (“Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Black Panther”) and writer and director Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) and his production company Family Owned.
The Director, Brand Publicity for Onyx Collective will work with the Vice President of Communications to craft messaging and manage Onyx Collective’s brand through external and internal publicity strategies in support of the organization’s strategic goals.
The ideal candidate will have a track record of strategic and effective communication skills, building trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to deliver in a fast-paced environment.
Drive executive publicity strategy in line with Onyx’s business goals that establishes, expands and enhances brand awareness and reputation both internally and externally.
Establish objectives, manage execution and drive key results for publicity efforts that shape and promote Onyx with press, industry and key stakeholders.
Raise the profile of Onyx and its executives by identifying and securing coverage in key publications and executive participation in prestigious industry events, panels and awards.
Develop key messaging framework and talking points to promote the overall Onyx brand and high profile executives.
Manage all Onyx Collective series development, pick up, overall deal and executive-based announcements with key trades and industry press.
Work in collaboration with the VP Publicity and Onyx Content Publicity and Marketing teams as well as Onyx brand team on identifying and developing strategic publicity initiatives.
Develop and pitch Onyx slate stories at key opportunistic moments – ahead of awards voting, anniversaries, sales opportunities, etc.
Identify key holidays and trend stories - and help break out the brand in those moments.
Develop communications support material to prepare executive leadership for strategic engagements with media, stakeholders and employees.
Staff executives at key press events, panels, and red carpets.
Maintain Onyx Collective’s key highlights, accolades and issues-based talking points to support any/all executive engagement and media prep.
Remain current on and research key industry news and trends.
Align with and support broader internal initiatives and priorities within DGE and The Walt Disney Company.
10+ years of experience in corporate and/or brand communications strategy and execution.
Strong relationships with entertainment trades and press.
Multicultural press relationships are a plus.
Ability to establish and support strategies, effectively execute, and innovate as needed to achieve the optimal outcome.
Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to grasp and translate complex and disparate ideas into a cohesive editorial with clear key messaging.
Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.
Crisis communications experience managing messaging and brand reputation.
Entertainment industry experience.
The ideal candidate will have working experience in both corporate communications and content publicity functions.
Ability to be strategically minded and develop communications strategy and message points that align with business objectives.
Experience working with talent and high-level executives.
