Job Summary:

For the Theatrical Research team at the Walt Disney Studios, the moviegoer is at the heart of everything we do. We are charged with finding the best methods to understand our customers’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We do this in pursuit of making our films the best they can be, and shaping marketing campaigns that will surprise and delight moviegoers around the world. As part of the Consumer Analytics and Insights team, you will join a dynamic group of research professionals who love movies, and are passionate about bringing the consumer voice into studio decision making every day. We are looking for a Director, Theatrical Research.

In partnership with the Vice President of theatrical research, this position leads the team responsible for managing primary quantitative and qualitative research studies on behalf of the Walt Disney Studios. The Director of theatrical research will lead quantitative and qualitative research initiatives on a global team, and ultimately serve as a key consumer and industry advisor to leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a host of primary research on releases from any one of the studios under the Walt Disney Studio Umbrella (20th Century Fox, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Disney Nature, Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios and Blue Sky Studios), as well as originals content developed for the Disney+ Streaming Service
  • Lead efforts to synthesize findings from traditional research and digital/social listening to ensure one cohesive story is told about our films and moviegoers
  • Deliver strategically actionable insights and employ the communication technique or cadence that will be most effective to drive key decisions
  • Build and maintain a broad network of peers across the Walt Disney Company insights and analytics organization to ensure other divisions have access to the information they need to meet business goals
  • Direct quantitative and qualitative research projects from inception to completion, including study design, development of appropriate methodologies, vendor selection, project management, analysis, and report / presentation delivery
  • Must be comfortable articulating and sharing opinions on creative materials, whether films, series, trailers, or shorter-form content
  • Lead two direct reports, developing their growth and contributions to the team through instruction, coaching, encouragement, and maintaining an open dialog about personal performance and the performance of the larger team
  • Help build and manage a budget to support the research plan
  • Acquire and manage syndicated research products as required to meet the needs of internal stakeholders
  • Prioritize a multitude of simultaneously occurring research projects, and lead efforts to effectively manage resources within the team
  • Build and maintain excellent relationships with external vendors, ensuring that the team receives the best possible work on time and on budget
  • Stay abreast of current trends and new techniques in the field of market research

Basic Qualifications:

  • Quantitative and qualitative market research experience
  • Extensive quantitative and qualitative research background, either supplier-side, client-side, or some combination thereof
  • Entertainment market research experience, with an emphasis in film
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally as needed
  • Exceptional research project management skills
  • Strong multitasking capabilities and the ability to work effectively in an environment of tight deadlines and constant change
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize ideas and issues to executive management
  • Strong attention to detail without losing sight of broader objectives
  • Ability to represent the Vice President, Theatrical Research in key stakeholder meetings
  • Flexible personality, quick learner and a strong, proactive work ethic
  • Must be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team, including in a supervisory role
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Computer literate with proficiencies in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Keynote

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 or more years of research experience
  • International Market Research experience preferred
  • Management experience preferred
  • Fluency and experience with digital/social KPIs preferred
  • Confident, self-motivated, and detail oriented
  • Analytical thinker who enjoys problem-solving
  • Strong business acumen
  • Intellectual curiosity and a passion for innovation
  • Organizational savvy, with the ability to “read a room”
  • Compelling storyteller

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing, Psychology or related field

Preferred Education

  • MBA or advanced degree in Market Research or Statistics a plus
