Job Summary:

The Principal, Software Asset Management is involved in leading the management and oversight of a growing software license and maintenance agreement portfolio. The position will partner with key stakeholders to develop and implement processes and initiatives to proactively manage license deployments, license and support agreements, and vendor relationships to maximize value while mitigating risk.

The Principal, Software Asset Management will be involved throughout the end-to-end software asset management lifecycle, partnering with Service Delivery, Sourcing, Legal, and Finance teams, to ensure the software license and support agreements are effectively managed to: meet business needs; maintain compliance with license/contract terms; and be optimized for cost efficiencies and savings.

Responsibilities:

The position is responsible and accountable for partnering with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to develop, implement, and oversee processes and initiatives for:
  • Acquiring new software products and incremental software licenses
  • Proactively managing software support and maintenance renewals
  • Documenting, publishing, and communicating software licensing policies and requirements
  • Assessing software licensing implications based on changes in technology and deployment strategies (e.g., server and desktop virtualizion, SaaS, Appliances, etc.)
  • Maintaining software license entitlement and other related data and information in the various tools and repositories required for the end-to-end software asset management lifecycle (e.g., contract repository, CMDB, software asset management tools, vendor entitlement systems, etc.
  • Reporting license deployment and entitlement compliance
  • Responding to internal and external requests for information as required to support license and maintenance negotiations, renewals, and other decision support activities
  • Responding to 3rd party software audit requests
  • Tracking and reporting financial information for use in developing budgets, cost analysis, savings analysis, etc.
In addition, this position will be directly engaged in pursuing Software Asset Management optimization and cost reduction efforts and initiatives such as:
  • Monitoring deployments vs. entitlements and identifying opportunities for license reharvesting and redeployment
  • Proactively monitoring environments for under-utilized software
  • Partnering with Sourcing and Legal to pursue alternative contract frameworks and licensing models / metrics
  • Partnering with Service Delivery Teams to mitigate risks and reap benefits associated with managing software license deployments in virtualized environments
  • Ensuring alignment between software licenses deployed and scope of maintenance and support agreements

This position will also:
  • Participate in procurement and negotiation activities as required
  • Carry out other duties as directed by the Sr Manager, Software Asset Management

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of related software asset management experience
  • Previous experience in leading the development and implementation of software asset management processes and disciplines within a large and diverse organization
  • Strong understanding of software licensing and license use rights, and software license and support agreements
  • Hands-on experience in managing and negotiating license and support agreements for large software publishers (e.g., IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, HP, Symantec, etc.)
  • Proven ability to organize and manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines through the effective use of resources and appropriate planning and communication methods and tools
  • Ability to innovate by introducing new ideas and processes to improve performance and productivity
  • Ability to engage and consult with others in a collaborative manner to solve problems
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, across all mediums and platforms (email, face-to-face, group meetings, conference calls, video conference, presentations, etc.)
  • Ability to solve problems independently with proper communication to management
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize with great initiative and can-do attitude
  • Ability to grasp new technologies quickly.
  • Strong vendor management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong asset management background, including tool sets
  • Certification in Software Asset Management
  • Strong negotiation skills

Required Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Business, Finance, Computer Science or related field
  • Business, Technology, Computer, Systems, Finance

  • MBA
