The Production Safety Specialist provides technical guidance and safety resource to film and television projects that are insured through the Disney Risk Management Program. The position facilitates an open communication with production regarding day-to-day safety issues and hazards. The individual evaluates production activity to help ensure compliance with local, state and federal health, safety and environmental regulations while productions work on a studio stage or at locations outside of a fixed studio.

The position mixes both fundamental safety skills and film/television production knowledge in assisting production in identifying and resolving safety concerns involving stunts, special effects, aircraft, watercraft, rigging, etc. The individual is involved during all aspects of physical production including pre-production planning, location scouting, set construction, actual production and striking of sets. On-site safety training for production crews, including education on the Company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), is also an important part of this position.

The ultimate goal of the Production Safety Specialist is to support each producer in their efforts to keep the safety message visible, maintain regulatory compliance and reduce injuries and illnesses.

Responsibilities

  • Orientation of production management, department heads and crew members to the Production Injury and Illness Prevention Program, including enforcement of the program and explaining disciplinary criteria.
  • Evaluation of scripts in advance of production to assist in the identification of possible hazards (i.e. use of aircraft, rigging, stunts, special effects, environmental hazards, etc.) both man-made and natural.
  • Occupational health and safety training program development to ensure safety program compliance (i.e. use of hand and power tools, personal protective equipment, equipment inspections, etc.).
  • Periodic unannounced inspections of set construction areas (mills and soundstages) and filming locations to evaluate machine safeguarding, use of personal protective equipment, fire and electrical hazards, safe egress, and other safety related issues.
  • Travel to filming locations to evaluate hazards which could adversely affect either the production or the environment itself. Examples include presence of overhead power-lines, poisonous plants and animals, water bodies which could become contaminated, etc.
  • Assist the production with injury/accident investigations, review reports and liaison with regulatory agencies.

Basic Qualifications

  • Five years of experience working in Motion Picture and Television production in a safety related discipline.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and conduct safety training classes for crew members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist).
  • Fall Protection Competent Person.
  • ACM/Lead Building Inspector

Required Education

  • College degree or five years equivalent work experience in motion picture and television production with responsibility for Environmental, Health / Safety Compliance.

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management, Health and Safety, or a closely related field.
