Job Summary:

As part of DTCI's Media Engineering organization, the Production Software Engineer (PSE) team provides strategic solutions to facilitate ESPN and DTCI global media workflows, from content acquisition through distribution to linear and non-linear platforms. We build tools and services that unify and standardize the media content chain for transmission feeds, media assets, metadata and media transfer workflows. PSE supports processes throughout the stages of acquisition, archive, production and global distribution.

The ME-PSE Product Development team is seeking an individual capable of supporting the services and infrastructure that power a wide array of ESPN media management applications and broadcast integrations necessary to facilitate media workflows including transmission, ingest, editing, tracking, and distribution. A desirable candidate should have a familiarity with common software development platforms and methodologies and will regularly perform web service, database and development operations functions. This will require working with various other Media Engineering database and infrastructure teams as well as application engineers to integrate, enhance and facilitate internal media workflows as well as those supporting linear and non-linear Digital distributions. In addition to systems engineering responsibilities, this role will have periodic, rotational support on-call responsibilities and will need to troubleshoot critical and time-sensitive production issues, identify and take proper steps to escalate tickets when necessary, and implement pro-active monitoring/alerting solutions to minimize impact of future instances.


  • Assist in the scoping and design of system architecture as media management services migrate to more scalable and globally accessible solutions.
  • Building and deploying docker container-based application services/clusters.
  • Assisting with server/service upgrades and migration to newer platforms.
  • Interpreting logs and metrics across systems to determine root causes, work-arounds and solutions.
  • Analyze and indentify problem areas within the various media management workflows and help to implement processes and solutions to improve our products, including (Datastax) database integration, DSE enhancements, JBoss/Wildfly application servers, as well as other common app services and messaging solutions.
  • Establishing, leveraging and maintaining strong relationships with key technology partners.
  • Working with the engineering teams to enhance systems to improve stability.
  • Assists in creation of monitoring solutions and configuration of pro-active systems alerting.
  • Identifying and implementing improvements further streamlining tier I/II application systems support, and escalation procedures.
  • Performs technical maintenance and troubleshooting for complex system and communicate system status as appropriate.
  • Rotation-based 24/7 tier two and tier three late evening and on-call support.
  • Respond quickly to production issues, ensuring optimal business continuity.
  • Receives work in the form of project tasks within scope of broader defined goals that often require the application of independent judgment and discretion and the prioritization of tasks

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting HA Enterprise-level services and scalable distributed web applications
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience with linux-based systems and OS operations
  • Familiarity with Database integrations (Datastax/Oracle) and use of indexing services such SOLR
  • Understands complex systems and integration points to pin-point problem areas
  • Understands digital and linear broadcasting concepts/workflows
  • Understands complex systems and integration points to pin-point problem areas
  • Basic understanding of enterprise technology operations and organizational structures
  • Well organized with good communications skills both written and oral
  • Takes direction well

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding and/or experience with cloud-native architectures and offerings (via AWS or Azure).
  • Has knowledge of broadcast systems that support television and digital media production and distribution.
  • Understanding and/or experience with container-based app/service technologies (Docker)
  • Knowledge and experience with various modern logging, monitoring and alerting solutions with tools such as Splunk, DataDog, Kibana, and New Relic
  • Understanding of multi-tier architectures, and software development life cycle methodologies and deployment operations

Required Education

  • BS Computer Science or related technical discipline or its equivalent
