Fireworks Designer - (Temporary Assignment/Project Hire)

Job Summary:

Position Summary

This role is responsible for developing and implementing all aspects related to pyrotechnics, fireworks and special effects for new live shows, as well as remounts of existing seasonal shows and creative sustainment of current shows for Disney Cruise Line Entertainment.

Reporting Relationship

This person will report to the Principal Fireworks Designer.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements special effects/pyrotechnics designs for live shows and facility infrastructure as assigned.
  • Provides updates to Show Directors, Producers, and Production Managers about confetti, pyrotechnics and other special effect development and feasibility.
  • Manages and provide accurate documentation of all live show effects plots at Disney Cruise Line.
  • Develops and realizes the design intent through the effective execution of the creative process.
  • Stays current with special effects technology research and development efforts within industry.
  • Functions as partner to maintain the proper training of special effects/pyrotechnics technicians.
  • Conducts ongoing “Entertainment Show Quality” evaluations of existing offerings and provide support to maintain their original show intent.
  • Maintains a strong relationship with Fireworks Production & Administration team, safety, purchasing, vendors and work with governmental agencies as required.
  • Maintains up-to-date show documentation.
  • Partners with Worldwide Safety team and Disney Cruise Line Safety team to ensure maritime safety standards are met and ensure Flag compliance.
  • Collaborate with shipboard Manager of Entertainment Technical and shipboard entertainment technical teams with regards to past, present and future show installations.
  • Complies with set policies and procedures as well as all maritime and ship rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Partner with shoreside Entertainment Technical Leadership, Disney Cruise Line Safety partners and the Standards and Sustainment team to ensure Safety Management Systems and Operating Guideline documentation is up to date and in accordance with current safety and regulatory practices.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years proven experience in the Entertainment Industry working in theatrical design, show development and live show operation with focus on special effects/pyrotechnics design.
  • Proficiency in FireOne firing software and hardware, scripting software, and previsualization software.
  • Solid understanding of current technology and industry standards for all aspects of special effects/pyrotechnics design, and presentation styles, (theatrical, industrial, concert, touring, etc.) as applied to live show and facility systems.
  • Proven track record of delivering on a project’s established scope, schedule and budget.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to express creative ideas.
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem solving and decision-making skills, often on the spot.
  • Highly motivated requiring minimal direction and follow up.
  • Proven track record to support the creative process by collaborating with other designers, directors, writers, and producers.
  • Ability to be flexible with work schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays and frequent extended international travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree in Technical Theater or equivalent with focus on special effects/pyrotechnics design.
  • Experience and/or understanding of facility design, engineering and construction
  • Digital literacy in Outlook, Microsoft Suite, AutoCAD, etc.
