Pixar Animation's world-class research group is looking for interns with specializing in the cross-section of computer graphics and the following areas: machine learning, rendering, and simulation.. The role requires one that has a PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Data Science or equivalent, and a deep interest in development of advanced computer graphics techniques. In this role, you’ll collaborate with artists, developers and other researchers to create innovative solutions that expand Pixar’s creative reach and technical capabilities while maintaining connections to the external research community.


Pixar’s Studio Tools Department is hiring a Core Software Development Intern to work with the team that develops high-quality, high-performance software serving as the backbone of our movie making process. The tasks will span from open source projects like USD (Universal Scene Description) and OpenSubdiv to a state-of-the-art evaluation engine that powers Presto, our in-house animation software.  Those interested have to have a good level of knowledge and experience in C++ engineering as well as UNIX/Linux systems, 3D graphics interaction techniques and 3D applications (Maya, Houdini, Katana, etc.). We take pride in our attention to detail and quality of code and hope you do too. Experience with modern GPU and HPC technologies is a plus.

Pixar’s Production Systems Operations Team (PSO) manages the distributed systems critical to our moviemaking process. You will help the PSO team keep the Renderfarm up and running and gain firsthand experience on how to maintain large systems at scale. If you like dreaming and scheming about how to keep Linux systems running smoothly and efficiently, then you may be a perfect fit for this internship!


Pixar’s Production Support Engineer team (PSE) connects with almost every group at the studio working to diagnose and problem-solve issues for users on GNU/Linux-based desktop platforms. This requires us to be responsive and collaborative, to maintain clear, open communication and prioritize a complex workflow, all under constantly changing conditions. Some of the things we work with everyday:  Fedora/RHEL/CentOS, rpm/yum, Xorg, Gnome, desktop hardware, Git, Python, shell scripts, device drivers, nfs, ssh. We are looking for interns who are passionate about delivering excellent support and providing technical solutions to our users who create great movies.


Pixar’s Systems Infrastructure Resources Team contributes to the daily operation of the physical infrastructure contained in our on-site data centers and tech rooms.  In this role, you will help keep the data centers operational and hardware functional. The internship is best for someone who is sensitive to and aware of how integral hardware systems run (is power being impacted, is the environment cool enough while many machines are in operation, etc.), and is capable of installing server components and setting up cable systems accurately.

If so, Pixar’s Mac Team wants to hear from you! Pixar Systems offers an exciting internship program geared towards students wanting to pursue a career in systems administration. The internship is intended to give students valuable hands-on experience and exposure to our unique environment. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn from working professionals. The Mac Team Intern will work in collaboration with the Mac Team to gain experience in systems administration with a focus on supporting OSX and iOS; commonly-used tools such as Terminal, Apple Remote Desktop & Casper; and provide day-to-day support to Mac Team administrators.

Pixar’s Systems Windows Team solves a variety of Windows-related issues each day in support of desktop users. This internship is best for someone with some familiarity with systems programming in a class environment and who has some experience on the command line, building Windows hardware and operating systems and who enjoys helping others with technical issues and questions.  Do your friends come to you asking for help fixing a problem on your Windows-based system or ask for advice on the latest gaming set-up?  If so, you may be someone interested in pursuing a career in systems administration.


Pixar's Network and Server Administration team is offering an internship for students interested in Systems Engineering and DevOps. For 12 weeks you will collaborate with the Network and Server Administration team (NSA) on projects where you will enhance infrastructure automation and developer experience. You will write code and utilize technologies to help us build and maintain infrastructure with reliability and security in mind.  Qualifications for this internship include experience administering and troubleshooting Linux, applied experience with Git, intermediate experience with Python or Go programming languages, an understanding of computer hardware architecture, and knowledge of TCP/IP networking. If you are someone with an interest in complex systems and a curiosity about how to make them easier to use and more reliable, this could be the internship for you!



  • Currently enrolled undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Digital Effects, Art, or a related field, returning to school upon conclusion of the Pixar Undergraduate Program
  • Available for the Summer 2020 Term (June - August)
  • Must have the authorization to work in the United States
  • Must submit visual work samples: video links, flat work, Github, etc.

Pixar’s Undergraduate Program ("PUP") is a classroom-based, 12 week, hands-on course taught by a variety of experienced Technical Directors at Pixar. In this program, students will have the opportunity to learn about Pixar's filmmaking process and explore a variety technical career options as they get firsthand experience in how a production studio works.

The classroom curriculum will focus on several technical aspects of filmmaking, such as: modeling, shading, rigging, lighting, simulation, and visual effects. Students will work on projects individually and in small groups to reinforce lecture concepts. Additionally, students will be exposed to production work in greater detail through presentations by a variety of Technical Directors at Pixar.

Pixar’s Technical Directors construct the geometry, articulation, or surface characteristics of computer-generated characters, objects, effects, and/or scenes. Technical Directors may write production-specific programs to support development and deployment of digital models, shaders, effects, and imagery, and maintains and supports the material created. Technical Director Interns will work to support the production pipeline via Sets, Characters, Effects, Simulation, Global Technology, or Rendering projects.
