Job Summary:

Play a role in conceiving, researching, designing, editing, and production of National Geographic’s retail map products.


Position entails all aspects of map production, proofing, and revision in a team-based mapping environment with production as primary area of specialization. Primary task is the creation or revision of assigned commercial map products. Production cartographers are responsible for map assembly, line and color specification assignment, special effects, artwork and photo color retouching, file preparation for proof generation, file revision during editorial cycles, and final file preparation for image setting or shipment. Creates and revises cartography for map publication to the standards of National Geographic Partners and the Maps Division. Operate a desktop publishing computer system with knowledge of current software packages for mapping. Production cartographers should be able to manage a workflow of multiple product lines for multiple in-house and outside clients at once. Coordinate and supervise outside contractors—create schedules and assist with budget and contract decisions. Manage relationships between clients, contractors, and the Editorial team. Meets project schedule deadlines by incorporating outside contractors work as well as using in-house resources. Maintains filing system for group access of map data and archives project work in an orderly and timely manner following divisional archive guidelines. Provides appropriate files for archiving in a searchable database. Keeps Archive up-to-date. Provides support to project team by assisting others, when necessary, with design, research, and edit. Promotes team-based approach to map-making at National Geographic Partners. Identify opportunities for growth of mapping within National Geographic Partners, including use of new techniques and software, new clients, and potential new products. Keep cartography at NGP in the forefront.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Geography, Cartography or Geographic Information Systems
  • Exceptional language and communication skills
  • Good mathematical skills with knowledge of map projections and map scales
  • Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat. Some knowledge of digital web-based mapping tools (Carto CSS, MapBox Studio, Carto DB etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

Physical Demands - Frequently required use of hands and fingers to write, manipulate telephone and computer keyboard. Regularly required to hear, talk and use close vision.
Other Skills & Abilities Required: Ability to lead a project team. Flexibility and willingness to function in a workgroup or team based environment. Ability to learn new software easily.

Required Education

Bachelor degree in Geography, Cartography, Geographic Information Systems

Additional Information:

The pay range for this position in Colorado is $48K- $58K per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on bonus, may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. This information is provided per the Colorado Equal Pay Act. Base pay information is based on market location.
