Associate R&D Imagineer – Creative Technologist

At Imagineering Research and Development, our mission is to use technology to build new experiences for our Guests and new tools for Imagineers and the Cast Members who power our parks. R&D is a team of engineers, designers, artists and scientists who share a passion for solving hard problems and building ground-breaking experiences.  As a creative technologist, you use your unique combination of creative and technical expertise to design, visualize and prototype new experiences. You’ll work with cross-disciplinary teams to translate ideas into something tangible. Using a variety of medium, from drawings, diagrams or visualization to hardware and software prototype, what you build will inform and inspire. 



  • Translate new, innovative experience and technology concepts into visuals for discussion and iteration (e.g. concept sketches, 3D modeling, graphic design, technical drawings, animation, infographics) 

  • Help build and support small and large-scale interactive prototypes, mock-ups, and play-tests using a variety of industry-standard and Disney-proprietary software and hardware tools 

  • Persuasively pitch compelling new experience concepts to project team and R&D leadership 

  • Provide necessary inputs to Project Leads and Technical Program Managers to assist in the definition of project scope, schedule, and budget for new development concepts 

  • Collaborate across diverse cross-functional teams, communicating clearly and with a positive and inclusive attitude 

  • Assist in or be solely responsible for the development and delivery of presentations and demos that clearly and persuasively communicate projects to a variety of stakeholders, including high-level executives 

  • Keep up-to-date on the evolving social, cultural, technology, and design landscape and apply knowledge of new trends and innovation in the marketplace 

  • Contribute to the culture and community of the department, adding value to the organization outside of direct assignments 

Basic Qualifications 

  • Portfolio that demonstrates strong design skills and sensibilities, with a well-developed sense of aesthetics (e.g. illustrations, presentations, graphic designs, 3D models, UI/UX mock-ups, production drawings) 

  • Proven ability to efficiently prototype new experiences, turning concepts into tangible artifacts that can be experienced and tested 

  • Driven by the idea of creating new experiences for people, that our technological development is always in service of delivering magic to our guests 

  • A broad understanding, comfort, and enthusiasm for technology and the ability to quickly and proactively learn new technologies, techniques, and tools 

  • Mastery of design and productivity applications (e.g. Apple Keynote, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Google Apps) 

  • Experience writing code and/or scripting 

  • Strong presentation skills and professional writing skills 

  • Responsibility and flexibility. Excellent time management skills combined with the adaptability required in a dynamic and constantly changing innovation environment 

Preferred Qualifications – Expertise in at least one of the following areas 

  • Proficiency with software prototyping tools and game engines (e.g. Unreal, Unity, Touch Designer, etc.) 

  • Experience with hardware prototyping tools (e.g. Arduino, Raspberry Pi, microcontrollers, sensors, etc.) 

  • Experience in 3D solid and/or surface modeling, rigging, or animation (e.g. Maya, SolidWorks, SketchUp) 

  • Experience in the design and fabrication of physical objects, props, signage, or setwork (e.g. carpentry, 3D printing, solid/surface modeling, laser cutting, etc.)  

Required Education 

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree or comparable industry experience in a field related to creative technology applications (e.g. Industrial Design, Product Design, Media Arts, Animation, Experience Design, Entertainment Technology, etc.) 

  • Additional engineering degree, minor, or coursework preferred (e.g. Computer Science Engineering, Human- Computer Interaction, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering)
