Disney Parks Live Entertainment produces world class theatrical shows and experiences for all of its parks and resorts. These shows often advance the state of the art in purpose built theaters, water venues, audio systems, special effects, fireworks, automation, flying, floating, and driving drones, lasers, and projection. We have an exciting newly created opportunity for a Director, Technical Design. Reporting to the Vice President of Technical Design and Delivery, the new executive will be responsible for bringing world class technology into the design process starting with the conceptual design phase and continuing through design and execution.

The Director, Technical Design will be chartered with innovating new technologies and the coalescence of technologies into technical architectures that deliver live entertainment performance in emerging next generation applications. In addition, he/she will be responsible for bringing the necessary talent from internal and external resources to deliver and implement these new technologies.


  • Oversee Live Entertainment Advanced Development technology projects; establishes objectives, applications and implementations
  • Drive strategic design decisions of the projects along with Executive Producers, Creative Directors, Site Executives and Global Entertainment Executives
  • Define requirements for groups designing technical systems in audio, lighting, automation, show control, wired and wireless data networks, projection/imaging systems, special effects, pyrotechnics and new technologies for Live Entertainment globally
  • Lead conceptual design and innovation of new Live Entertainment Systems Architectures (Hardware and Software) to address new technology challenges.
  • Research and engage technology consultants and companies to invent/progress/adapt technologies for live entertainment
  • Champion, socialize, market, and communicate with the discipline and associated projects leaders utilizing the new technologies and their associated process changes.
  • Lead developmental efforts and serve as liaison on integrated technology, advocate for funding and engagement by the Tech/R&D Studio.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in the theatrical and/or theme park industry with proven design and implementation experience in one or more of the following system disciplines: control, wireless, electrical, automation, mechanical, audio, and video
  • Proven background developing strategies for the design, testing and productization of new technologies for live entertainment
  • Proven experience integrating systems during design phase including electrical controls, mechanical and media systems
  • Proven ability to inspire, motivate and lead teams in the design of new technology through the completion of projects
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to present and distill technical concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences at all levels
  • Demonstrated project management controls practices including but not limited to contract management, estimating, scheduling and risk assessment
  • Proven ability to successfully operate in a highly matrixed organization where partnership and influence are key drivers

Required Education

  • BS Degree in Fine Arts, Technical Theater, Engineering or related field

Preferred Education

  • Masters of Fine Arts
