Walt Disney Imagineering is the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, and research and development arm of The Walt Disney Company. Its talented corps of Imagineers is responsible for the creation - from concept initiation through installation - of all Disney Resorts, theme parks and attractions, real estate developments, regional entertainment venues, and new media projects.

Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development (WDI R&D) is looking for someone to lead the Materials Science team. A successful candidate will have a fundamental understanding of the interdependencies of materials structure, properties, and processing; how these interdependencies affect and guide material selection and development. The successful candidate will enjoy a dynamic interdisciplinary creative environment where teamwork and critical thinking skills are required and will collaborate with both research and project teams throughout WDI and theme parks worldwide. The successful candidate will also interact with outside vendors and partners to identify and develop next generation materials and processes. The successful candidate will become a part of an Imagineering team that are responsible for the creation - from concept initiation through installation - of all Disney Resorts, theme parks and attractions, real estate developments, regional entertainment venues, and new media.


  • Obtain a deep understanding of long-term materials needs for Walt Disney theme parks
  • Develop and manage shorter-term materials-related programs as needed by groups within WDI
  • Interface with executives from various WDI studios and our park partners
  • Plan each fiscal year budget and scope of the materials program
  • Communicate and present WDI R&D projects based on analysis of needs and risk
  • Stay up to date with new materials and manufacturing processes for current and future projects
  • Advise WDI on technology strategy related to materials science and allied technical disciplines
  • Regularly find and recruit leased workers and interns to stay staffed to support scope of the program
  • Mentor interns and develop interns’ technical and professional skills
  • Manage materials testing and materials laboratory, including the people and all work coming in and out of the lab
  • Identify and collaborate with outside vendors on sourcing and testing materials

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience with some or all of the following: mechanical properties of materials and mechanical characterization, chemical properties of materials, polymer formulation, and reliability of materials (wear, weathering, strength)

Preferred Qualifications

  • A subject matter expert in an area of materials science
  • Experience with materials research and development
  • Capable of performing in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, while multitasking as part of inclusive artistic and engineering teams
  • Able to effectively manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, while meeting deadlines
  • Able to work in a team environment with good communication and organizational skills
  • Strong work ethic and self-starter
  • Experience operating and running a materials laboratory
  • 3+ years lab experience

Required Education

  • B.S./M.S./Ph.D./OTHER: Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry (Organic or Inorganic), Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field
