The Animal Health Associate works within ASE (Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment Team) and interacts with numerous internal and external partners at WDW (Walt Disney World). Primary responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, assisting with various aspects of the pathology and animal health operations at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the Seas with Nemo & Friends (EPCOT). This position reports to the Animal Health leadership team (currently a pathologist) and performs all the duties listed below. This is a non-salaried casual temporary (CT) role with availability and work hour’s dependent on the needs of the operation so a flexible schedule is necessary. This role must align with CT guidelines and is not an employee benefits role.
The candidate will be expected to adhere to all WDW, ASE, and internal departmental policies, including “The Five Keys Basics”, be familiar with and adhere to all safety protocols, complete all required regulatory training in a timely fashion, and actively participate in departmental projects and activities. This position covers two separate facilities and will often require travel with reliable transportation between them on the same day. In addition, primary responsibilities include but not exclusive to:
General cleaning and maintenance of the pathology necropsy facilities and laboratory
Ensure these facilities are “show ready”
Animal Related Procedures:
Setting up equipment for pathology procedures
Process laboratory samples for internal or external laboratories
Log, label, process, catalogue, and store biomaterial samples collected during clinical and necropsy procedures
Transport deceased collection animals to necropsy facilities as needed and assist with necropsies as needed.
Handle biohazardous waste safely
Samples and Supplies:
Prepare laboratory samples for shipment to outside diagnostic facilities
Transfer supplies from one destination to another across WDW property & off property
Stock/label pathology supplies as needed
Participate in guest interactions on a regular basis
Assist with the development and implementation of new presentations to be used with Guests and Cast Members. These presentations will help educate and inspire our Guests/Cast in areas of aquatic/zoological medicine and wildlife conservation.
Additional Duties include but are not limited to:
Accurately fill out pathology and animal health procedural forms
Enter data into the electronic medical records system including transferring reports (laboratory results, pathology records, etc.).
File hard copy records
Transfer, edit, label, catalog and upload images/video into an electronic data storage system
Track budgets through the use of spreadsheets and basic invoice data management
Create and manage pathology medical related spreadsheets (electronically)
Opportunity for prosection role as needed with training under the direction of the pathologists
Collaborate with animal care and other team partners (pest management, water sciences, etc.) for animal health related projects
- AS Degree in Science
- Inter-personal skills and the ability to work well in a team setting
- Self-motivated and able to follow directions well
- Detail-oriented and able to process medical samples, manage information, medical records and various forms accurately
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Computer proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Written and oral communication skills
- Organizational skills and able to meet project and task deadlines
- Public speaking skills with experience interacting with members of the general public
Preferred Education Qualifications:
- BS Degree Veterinary Technology, Marine Biology, Zoology
- Veterinary Technicians Program Degree
- 12 months experience in a Zoo or Aquarium in an animal-related position
- Knowledge of medical / pathology procedures, instruments, lab supplies, etc.
- Experience with practices and procedures established in veterinary pathology, medical or forensic examinations and laboratory facilities
