The Disney Decision Science and Integration (DDSI) is the Walt Disney Company’s center of excellence for developing and deploying innovative analytics that support decision making for client organizations across The Walt Disney Company (TWDC), including Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution (e.g., ABC, ESPN, FX, Studio Entertainment, Disney Theatrical Group) and Parks, Experiences & Products. To drive business value through decision-shaping analytics, DDSI leverages optimization, simulation, statistics and machine learning models to deploy new analytical capabilities.

The Decision Science Application Development, Delivery and Operations team within DDSI is looking for a Director, Decision Science Integration. This person will lead the development of decision science models and integration of solutions across the DDSI project portfolio commitments. To do so, they provide oversight for a highly skilled team of experts across multiple technical domains (e.g., statistics, machine learning, optimization, simulation), in order to design, develop and sustain solutions that advance decision-making capabilities across TWDC. DDSI solutions support business units across TWDC in business domains including sales, revenue management, pricing, personalization, forecasting, marketing, and beyond.

This leader will seek out algorithms and data-driven methods to support business decision makers via science-driven applications. They are responsible for development, delivery and sustainment of science solutions, including the need to keep solutions across the project portfolio relevant to the business (e.g., model enhancements, calibration). In addition to being accountable for the modeling within science solutions, they also ensure solutions are reliable, consistent, accessible, secure and timely to support the business. To be successful, this individual will need to appropriately integrate solutions by collaborating with partnering DDSI executives, segment-specific technology leadership, project managers, client leaders, and technical subject matter experts. This leader will serve as a champion for organizational initiatives to continue a relentless pursuit toward our own operational excellence, as well as innovation via science-driven business capabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to lead a team of highly-skilled, technical leaders and subject matter experts who perform analysis, modeling, solution development, sustainment, and product/client engagement across a portfolio of projects in a domain area to support TWDC
  • Inspire team to achieve a vision and nurture trust and inclusivity in a quickly changing, collaborative climate
  • Direct the design and development of advanced analytical capabilities (i.e., deploying AI/ML, forecasting, estimation, optimization and/or simulation in an ensembled fashion)
  • Exhibit critical strategic thinking and creative problem solving in order to scope work, shape deliverables, set priorities, meet deadlines, and communicate results
  • Support team as a creative and inquisitive thinker who is enthusiastic about seeking out and employing new scientific approaches and being responsive to client needs
  • Knowledge of system development and implementation lifecycle
  • Lead directly and via collaboration in a matrixed environment with emphasis on strong communication, interpersonal collaboration and change management skills
  • Connect business partners, clients and team with processes improvements and the adoption of the latest business, science and technology standards and best practices (e.g., cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, scalable and sustainable design practices)
  • Ability to operate at all levels of the organization, including tactical project leadership, strategic planning, and business-focused consulting with clients and executives
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, with ability collaborate effectively with colleagues ranging from entry-level professionals to high-level executives
  • Advanced degree in quantitiative field such as operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, industrial engineering, physics
  • Deep experience in best practices for descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics (10+ years)

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in an analytical discipline
  • Mathematical modeling, such as AI/ML, forecasting, estimation, optimization and/or simulation techniques (e.g., linear/non-linear programming, discrete event simulation, hyperparameter tuning, predictive modeling, supervised learning)
  • Experience with analytical coding languages such as Python, R, SAS, SQL
  • Ability to learn technical methods and tools independently
  • Strength in leadership to navigate complex organizational dynamics, remove barriers, and be a thought partner for all levels

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with software development tools such as GitLab/GitHub, Docker
  • Cloud computing concepts including auto-scaling, AWS infrastructure & services

Required Education

  • Masters degree or equivalent experience in quantitiative field such as operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, industrial engineering, physics

Preferred Education

  • PhD in quantitiative field such as operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, industrial engineering

Additional Information:

An incumbent in this role has the objective to ensure the successful delivery of innovative science-driven capabilities and cultivate expert talent across a range of analytical disciplines across the breadth of the entire DDSI portfolio. This position exists to lead the design, development, deployment and sustainment of science-driven capabilities that are provided to TWDC business segments. The role leads 4-6 senior managers, who have 3-9 direct reports each, along with the project deliverables of additional matrixed team members (1-6). The individual in this role provides a strong voice of leadership for overall project direction and end-to-end solution delivery, beyond simply the scientific modeling, across a range of business domains (e.g., finance, marketing, sales, pricing) for multiple lines of business (e.g., media networks, resorts, parks, cruise, studios). This role manages not only science talent but must also cultivate relationships with partnering technical teams and client business units, and must collaborate and communicate effectively with audiences ranging from entry-level professionals to high-level executives. Aside from developing and sustaining existing and new products, they are also expected to become experts in rapidly evolving fields (e.g., digital media ad sales, dynamic pricing, machine learning ).
