The veterinary technician will be responsible for performing all the duties listed below under the direction, guidance, or instruction of the staff veterinarians, certified veterinary technicians, and/or managers.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the staff veterinarians with animal procedures (clinical, research, pathobiology)
  • Analyzing lab samples collected on all of the residents & rehab animals
  • Animal procedure set-up/procedure assistance/procedure clean-up
  • You will be based primarily at the Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT however there may often be Cross Utilization occurring at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
  • In this role you will be partnering with many teams throughout the WDW Company but most frequently within the Animal Science and Education Teams.
  • Anesthesia (including equipment set-up/use, intubation, monitoring, catheter placement, etc.)
  • Formulate, prepare and dispense medication as ordered by staff veterinarians.
  • Proficient in the proper collection, handling and processing of blood and other diagnostic samples from marine mammals, elasmobranchs, fish, sea turtles, birds, mammals, and reptiles with the ability to adapt these skills to a variety of exotic species.
  • Perform radiography using both mobile and portable machines to accurately take diagnostic quality radiographs.
  • Evaluate quality and technique of radiographs and make proper adjustments.
  • Proficient in clinical laboratory procedures (this includes, but is not limited to: use of chem analyzers, manual CBC techniques including differential analysis on marine mammals, elasmobranchs, fish, sea turtles, mammals, birds, reptiles, and procedure for sending samples to outside labs.
  • Familiar with the set- up, use and care of equipment and instruments for medical procedures, (this includes but is not limited to endoscopic equipment, ECG, ultrasound equipment, dental equipment as well as video monitoring and recording equipment).
  • Provide intensive and critical care to all patients.
  • Proficient at administering treatment to hospitalized animals and the ability to adapt these skills to a variety of exotic species.
  • Familiar with computerized medical record keeping and the ability to become proficient in ZooMR (Zoological Medicine Record Program).
  • Participate in educational presentation to our guests and on a regular basis.
  • Ensure that hospital facility is “show ready”.
  • Participate in team projects and actively participate in accomplishing goals set by the veterinary hospital team.
  • Familiar with basic windows programs.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong inter-personal skills.

Basic Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology school. Minimum 2 year program.
  • Certified as a veterinary technician in one state with the ability to become certified in Florida within 1 year
  • 2 years’ experience as a Certified, Licensed, or Registered Veterinary Technician (non-domestic species).
  • 2 years’ experience processing lab samples for both in-house testing and for external laboratories
  • 2 years’ experience performing in house sample analysis on blood, fecal/cloacal washes, gill clips, skin scrapes,
  • urinalysis, blowhole exudates, etc.
  • Minimum 2 year’s proven experience completing CBC with differential
  • Demonstrated ability to use ISTAT and Vet Scan
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience taking good quality radiographs
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with Equipment Maintenance
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience ordering parts and supplies for veterinary equipment
  • Ability to be flexible with work schedule including hours and days worked
  • Ability to work holidays
  • Ability to be on call
  • Ability to lift pounds and carry 50 pounds and to move 100 pound carts
  • Demonstrated clear written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to verbally communicate detail oriented information accurately
  • Demonstrated ability to listen and follow directions well
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency with Word, Excel advanced spreadsheets, Medical Records Systems,
  • photographic databases, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with interacting with public and good public speaking skills

Required Education

  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology school. Minimum 2 year program.
  • Certified as a veterinary technician in one state with the ability to become certified in Florida within 1 year.

Preferred Education

  • Additional Bachelors degree in zoology, marine biology, or other related sciences
