Veterinary Technician

Job Summary:

As the Veterinary Technician, you will provide veterinary care and laboratory services to our animal collection here at Disney’s Animal Kingdom by working to ensure the highest quality of clinical support. We are a lively, hi-energy, team oriented practice. This position reports directly to the Veterinary Practice Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians during medical procedures including set up and use of equipment

  • Familiar with the set-up, use and care of equipment and instruments for medical procedures, (this includes but is not limited to endoscopic equipment, ECG, ultrasound equipment, dental equipment as well as video monitoring and recording equipment)
  • Anesthesia (including equipment set-up/use, intubation, monitoring, catheter placement, etc.)
  • Formulate, prepare and dispense medication as prescribed by staff veterinarian
  • Proficient at administering treatment to hospitalized animals and the ability to adapt these skills to a variety of exotic species
  • Provide intensive and critical care including emergency procedures and triage of patients.
  • Perform radiography using DR and CR technology and the willingness to learn the operation of our CT machines
  • Work with zoo keeper staff on behavior training of animals for medical procedures
  • Familiar with computerized medical record keeping
  • Participate in educational presentations to our guests and on a regular basis.
  • Ensure that hospital facility is show ready
  • Participate in team projects and actively participate in accomplishing goals set by the Animal Health Department and the Veterinary Practice Manager

Basic Qualifications:

  • Certified, Registered or Licensed Veterinary Technician

  • Florida licensure or be qualified to apply for Florida licensure

  • 3+ years of clinical experience in a zoo or exotic practice working with non-domestic species
  • Proficient in the proper collection, handling and processing of diagnostic samples from birds, mammals and reptiles with the ability to adapt these skills to a variety of exotic species
  • Skilled in clinical laboratory procedures (this includes but is not limited to use of chemical analyzers; manual CBC techniques including differential analysis on mammals, birds, reptiles and fish; perform cytology and parasitology; processing samples to ship to outside labs)
  • Experienced in blood collection from mammals, birds and reptiles, with the ability to adapt these skills to a variety of exotic species
  • Proficiency in basic computer functions necessary to operate in a Windows environment and other technologies, including ZIMS
  • Schedule availability may include weekends, variable shifts, and holidays

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working at an AZA-accredited facility
  • Skilled in ISTAT and ABAXIS equipment
  • Experience with interacting with public and good public speaking skills

Required Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology school (Minimum 2 year program)

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
