Job Summary:

The role primarily covers non contentious transactional commercial real estate matters and involves advising on all of the Group’s commercial real estate issues (mainly commercial landlord and tenant) throughout the EMEA region including the drafting and negotiation of all associated documentation.

The scope of work includes all aspects of commercial real estate practice from general advice on property management matters to conduct and negotiation on transactional matters including lease acquisitions and disposals. The role also includes exposure to wider property related matters including general commercial, construction, facilities and planning advice.

Whilst the role is essentially non contentious, the ability to support and manage property litigation arising is also required from time to time.

The candidate will support the Principal Counsel, Real Estate EMEA and the Company’s US based Corporate Real Estate Team and EMEA based real estate professionals in the management and support of the Company’s broad real estate requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Key Tasks/Objectives
    • Assist with the diverse real estate workload for the EMEA region working closely with the Principal Counsel as well as the Company’s in house and external real estate advisors
    • Legal advisor on negotiations for commercial landlord and tenant matters
    • Providing guidance on any legal issues arising in respect to the business’ Property portfolio throughout EMEA
    • Monitor applicable legal developments domestically and on a regional basis
    • Monitor industry/technology developments
    • Strengthen internal and external relationships in ways that benefit the business
  • Deal Management
    • Work closely with the Principal Counsel and the real estate team in negotiating all commercial landlord and tenant documents. Covers acquisition and disposal, transactional and litigious matters as well as related general commercial, construction and planning advice. Involves:
      • Developing a solid understanding of the business’ expectations and negotiating position
      • Taking a commercial and practical approach to deal negotiation, whilst understanding the client’s and the business‘s negotiating thresholds.
      • Completing deals within agreed and often challenging timescales
  • Work closely with the real estate team and all levels of management within the business to ensure timely coordination and negotiation of all matters
  • Other General Activities
    • Work effectively with all business colleagues as necessary on a cross-functional and cross-territory basis
    • Assist with the ongoing review and re-drafting of precedent documents
    • Adhere to defined corporate real estate business practices, taking opportunities to improve them where applicable
  • Occasional travel requirements to overseas territories may be required

Basic Qualifications:

Skills and Experience
  • Experienced commercial property lawyer
  • Detailed knowledge of Commercial Property and Landlord and Tenant Law
  • Ideally a few years PQE (preferably gained both in private practice and in-house)
  • Landlord and Tenant and commercial property
  • Language skills desirable but not essential
  • Experience of general commercial, planning and construction an advantage
  • LLB or Degree/LPC
  • Qualified as solicitor or barrister
  • Knowledge of Landlord and Tenant and Property Law
  • Self-starter and self-supporting
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • Methodical and meticulous
  • Accurate completion of all documents within agreed timelines
  • Communication of legal matters to all levels or legal and/or non-legal audience
  • Experience in “related” disciplines of construction, planning and general commercial matters would be useful but not essential
