Job Summary:The role
ESPN is looking for an experienced sports news editor who will work with reporters, as well as edit and write news stories. ESPN is part of the Walt Disney company and this position is based in the Disney offices in Hammersmith, offering a competitive salary.
Candidates will be expected to display outstanding news judgment, thorough knowledge of digital practices (including SEO) and a strong knowledge of journalistic principles and methods. The role ensures all content meets established ESPN standards and is a hands-on position where you will be working with all kinds of content (text, video, audio).
The Digital Sports Journalist will work closely with ESPN’s sports news operations, not only in London but also in ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, CT., USA and other regions around the world. The role will require the candidate to create content around multiple sports, from football to cricket and golf, tennis, NBA, NFL and emerging sports such as MMA and eSports.
This position requires daily communication with teams across multiple continents and time zones. Strong organisational skills are a must.
This is a freelance position. You will be expected to work five days out of seven, including evenings and weekends.
We’re looking for a self-starter with a nose for sports news, especially football, who has experience working at a high level in sports journalism and understands how to operate in a 24/7 news environment that includes desktop, mobile, social and personalised platforms.
You will be used to working with reporters and finding the most creative angles to all kinds of stories. You will have a solid contacts book and be keen to pick up the phone to make more.
This is a desk-based role, so the right candidate must have editing or news desk experience. Excellent copy-editing skills and attention to detail are essential.
Adaptability is also key, and the right candidate will have a first-rate sports knowledge. Successful candidates need to thrive in a busy newsroom and work to extremely tight deadlines. Speaking a second European language would be an advantage, but is not crucial.

- Collaborative - you will work closely with our reporters so a positive team player is essential
- Social media: being across the latest trends and aware of social opportunities on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat
