We are seeking an experienced candidate to fill the permanent position of Principal (Director), EMEA Indirect Tax based in Hammersmith London.

The successful candidate will support the VP EMEA Tax by leading the EMEA indirect tax function, overseeing all indirect tax activities for Disney’s EMEA operations. The role will encompass indirect compliance, advisory, audit support, tax legislation updates and the technology and tax digitalisation strategy.

The individual will liaise with business and finance heads in each line of business in EMEA and be responsible for efficiently structuring group operation changes from an indirect tax perspective. As the EMEA indirect tax environment is leading the way on the Digitalisation of Taxation, the role will help shape the global digitalisation strategy working closely with the US indirect taxes Director. The role will oversee one Manager level direct report and be responsible for managing all aspects of their workload and development. As a senior member of the team, the individual will also help develop the wider team, including junior members, and help determine the future direction and priorities of the team.

Business Partnering
  • Be the EMEA Indirect Tax representative and pro-actively partner with the EMEA regional business, finance heads, and legal of each line of business
  • Work with the business to fully understand all commercial initiatives, evaluating business models, effectively structuring and suggesting potential solutions or changes to supply and contractual flows to manage risks, costs and maximise opportunities
  • Working with other members of the EMEA tax team considering the local country operations, reviewing commercial initiatives across the region and ensure the operations are structured appropriately and have the correct processes and controls from an indirect tax perspective
  • Pro-actively identify any indirect tax planning opportunities and project managing these to implementation
  • Liaising with US tax department and US business teams to design and work together on global indirect tax initiatives and processes.
  • Overview of customs duty and supporting the imports manager on customs duty from a planning and strategic perspective
  • Working closely with accounting and finance teams globally to ensure that Disney satisfies all its indirect tax compliance obligations
  • Responsibility for continuous process improvement in respect of indirect tax
  • Managing and reviewing the day to day VAT compliance obligations for VAT registrations across EMEA in respect of the European Supply Chain Organisation line of business, The Disney Store distance selling and some inbound businesses i.e. MOSS. Includes the review of VAT returns and Intrastat and GL reconciliations
  • Pro-actively reviewing indirect tax processes and controls to ensure that processes are best practice and meet legislative requirements e.g. SAO, SAFT
  • Leading indirect tax authority audits in EMEA and internal management audits and supporting indirect tax audits globally, where applicable
Tax Environment changes
  • Pro-actively work with advisers, tax authorities and the business to identify current and potential local EMEA and Global tax legislation changes, determining how most appropriately to manage these changes, then leading the implementation.
  • Involvement in indirect tax policy and lobbying at a UK, EU and global level, where applicable, on legislative and environmental changes that impact Disney’s business including Brexit and BEPS and determining how best to implement these changes.
  • Working closely with the Continuous Process Improvement team and IT on digitalisation of indirect compliance, identifying opportunities for automation, data analytics, out-sourcing to efficiently meet additional compliance requirements in the short, medium and long-term.
  • Supporting Disney Worldwide Shared Services on an ongoing basis with training and technical advice
  • Writing material and undertaking training for in house staff on VAT technical matters
  • Create and maintain a strong external network to ensure Disney is aware of a wide-range of Companies and Industries attitudes, structure, issues and processes regarding indirect taxes, to aid Disney in its development of Indirect Taxes strategy.
  • Be part in Industry groups for relevant line of businesses to enable Disney to be aware of industry developments and best practices.
  • Create and maintain a good internal network to ensure Indirect Tax is involved and consulted in all commercial initiatives and relevant projects
  • Managing Direct report (Manager) ensuring direction motivation, guidance, assurance, training and development plans and including obtaining and providing regular feedback, performance reviews and appraisals.
  • Provide mentoring, motivation, guidance and assistance to the wider junior tax team members and other finance teams
  • Manage external indirect tax consultants to minimise their costs and optimise their use and efficiency, working within EMEA Tax budge

Basic Qualifications

  • Qualified CTA
  • 10+ years’ experience PQE in indirect tax compliance and advisory experience
  • Big 4 tax experience is a preference
  • Experience of working in an indirect tax function of a tax department of a large multinational company

Preferred Qualifications

  • US based multinational and media sector experience a plus
  • Excellent International Indirect tax compliance and advisory experience for multinational companies
  • Strong Accounting and VAT reporting background in a multinational environment
  • Strong working knowledge of Indirect Tax compliance processes, from data extraction to return submission with focus on data integrity and global compliance automation and process solutions.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills with ability to make decisions and recommendations
  • Ability to summarise and communicate complex technical issues
  • Able to manage workload to tight deadlines and prioritise multiple tasks and work streams
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships at all levels of the organisation
  • SAP knowledge strongly preferable
