Job Summary:

Disney is looking for a motivated Product Design & Development Manager to join our Global Product Creation team!

We are looking for a trend-led, fashion expert with a passion for design and creativity to join our talented team in Hammersmith, west London.

The Product Design Manager will manage the execution of product design and development for Adult fashion across all of our characters and brands, They will work with creative, category, franchise and brand merchandising to ensure highest quality, consumer-focused, trend-right product lines across licensing and direct-to-retail models.


  • Manage across licensed and DTR creative product development departments from concept through to final approved product and assess pre- and post-quality delivery
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant standards to guarantee product is fit for purpose and viable to go to market
  • Set and oversee the management of departmental critical paths and product to market (PTM) in line with the business brief and key performer indicators (KPIs) with particular attention to design development timelines and deliverables with partners
  • Develop and manage the creative output from licensees, DTR and collaboration partners while driving a strong innovation agenda through product creation, ensuring brand consistency, storytelling and compelling execution within a commercial context
  • Manage creative relationships with internal and external partners, providing inspiration and ensuring product is brand appropriate and adheres to Disney guidelines
  • Offer creative input and trend direction to inspire licensees/retailers and help drive quality product development
  • Run ideation sessions with licensees/retailers to drive product innovation
  • Manage all design projects (e.g. product toolkits, product pitches, inspiration boards) within the category, utilising internal and external resources, as required
  • Establish and maintain relationships with retailers, internal stakeholders/partners and global and international creative teams
  • With a focus on creativity and innovation, develop and deliver high quality, authentic storytelling products, which are scalable, and have longevity
  • Manage up-front trend point of view (POV) for softlines in partnership with creative, and brand merchandising
  • Identify future areas of growth (with approval of Director) across franchise and the product category
  • Work with licensees and collaborators to lead the development of consumer-centric product lines that are trend-right, deliver market-leading innovation, drive revenue and capture market share globally and locally
  • Develop team to produce designs that deliver great price/value for each tier of the value pyramid
  • With direction from the Product Design and Development Director (Softlines), implement product design strategy that ensures our products are market leaders and deliver on business strategies
  • Responsible for monitoring competitors, product innovations and market dynamics to deliver trend-right products for each segment of the retail landscape
  • Direct product approvals that uphold the integrity of our franchises and deliver the highest price value
  • Work with licensees and collaboration partners to design and approve market-leading product lines for the franchises
  • Deliver against seasonal concept and vision for categories in partnership with creative, brand merchandising and sourcing teams
  • Partner with the studio, content providers, global creative and marketing teams to bring our content and intellectual property (IP) to life properly and with a consistent brand point of view across the globe
  • Monitor and maintain quality in colour, material, function and form of all products
  • Obtain quality assurance (QA) approvals and re-design as needed to meet global quality standards
  • Effectively manage agency, DTR and partner relationships
  • Regular review systems and processes with the purpose of reducing administration and carving out more creative time, ensuring efficient practice
  • Establish and manage high-level softlines EMEA PTM calendar anchored to global PTM but with the relevant local nuance

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience as a creative manager, developing, and managing the performance of a creative team
  • Experience in designing and developing softlines product that resonates with consumers both globally and locally across the world
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of licensing and experience working with multiple global and regional partners
  • Strong understanding and high level of interest in and understanding of The Walt Disney Company consumer product portfolio
  • Experience working with large-scale, global retailers and partners to bring product designs to market for a variety of different consumer targets
  • Proven experience working, and thriving, in a matrix organisation
  • Experience in multiple segments within the global market
  • Proven experience of building effective relationships, leading and managing change and collaboration across departments
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a team and lead and manage them towards achieving a common goal
  • Demonstrable ability to manage a product design team in the creation of consumer-led items through the development cycle
  • Ability to analyse data, construct practical conclusions and implement recommendations to achieve business targets

  • Strong written and spoken English for business use, essential
  • Demonstrable ability to capitalise on market trends and consumer Zeitgeist to maximize value creation throughout the trend cycle
  • Demonstrated ability to create, leverage and scale innovation in consumer products
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to drive quality product design within financial KPIs
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and engage with a diverse audience including experience working with external partners and business owners, to bring product designs to life
  • Proven ability to think creatively and disruptively to bring and infuse new ideas into product design
  • Demonstrated ability to support with management of the organizational and cultural change efforts needed to ensure new, innovative concepts, business practices, and technologies are fully adopted and integrated into the business
  • Computer literate including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Adobe and other design packages
  • Have advanced knowledge of trends within the industry of relevant category and the broader world of design with working knowledge of common manufacturing techniques and their application in production
  • An ability to communicate a clear design brief and ensure deliverables meet all criteria
  • An ability to communicate design ideas using freehand drawing, computer techniques and/or third party design resources
  • An ability to deliver against set deadlines and budgets
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to effectively present design ideas to internal/external stakeholders at all levels
