Senior Payroll Officer

We are seeking an experienced Senior Payroll Officer to join our Head Office function on a permanent basis.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Acting as the primary contact on all UK and Ireland payroll related issues, ensuring that employees receive correct remuneration on the published pay dates, thereby ensuring that the Company meets its contractual obligations.
  • Providing cover for the Payroll Manager as required.
  • Acting as escalation point for technical queries or complaints.
  • Ensuring that the Company meets all statutory, payroll related obligations.
  • Establishing working relationships with internal partners and the payroll provider to ensure smooth payroll operations at all times.
  • Ensuring input is 100% checked prior to payroll committing the payroll.
  • Overseeing and supporting the members of the team and acting as an escalation point when required, offering regular training sessions.
  • Reviewing, improving and streamlining internal processes to reduce manual intervention and work-arounds.
  • Supporting payroll manager with several ad-hoc projects (HMRC, Payroll supplier, supplementary payrolls etc)
  • Ensuring knowledge is up to date with current and future legislative changes.

Suitable candidates will possess the following skills and experience:
  • Working knowledge of relevant employment law including: Working Time regulations; rights on termination; Parental Leave. Has practical knowledge of implications when recovering overpayments.
  • Maintains an up to date knowledge of all payroll legislation (eg: Income tax, Court Orders, NI, SMP, SSP, SPP, SAP, Student Loans, records retention periods, statutory changes, etc.)
  • Able to apply all current legislation to their payroll function. Able to identify Company's areas of potential exposure to penalties.
  • Able to calculate National Insurance Contributions & PAYE taxes manually. Can explain the difference in taxable / gross pay to staff.
  • Proven experience of reviewing and developing payroll procedures & policies, and maintaining them at all times.
  • Has managed expenses & benefits. Able to identify benefits subject to tax & NI, & can explain how to keep relevant statutory records, & avoid penalties.
  • Able to balance & reconcile payrolls. Can interpret accountancy terminology. Able to control monthly HMRC returns, make accurate postings to the correct ledger accounts, & prepare for Year End returns.
  • Demonstrates an up-to-date understanding of PSA & P11D legislation, can complete PSA & P11D returns on time, & with confidence. Can explain how employees will use these forms - especially for self-assessment.
  • Has taken full accountability for Year End reconciliation & HMRC submissions. Has demonstrated the ability to plan, prepare & implement a successful year end balancing payroll. Can clearly explain all procedures, statutory duties & penalties relating to the payroll year end. Can fully complete all necessary statutory documentation.
  • ADP in-house processing experience essential.
  • SAP knowledge preferred
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred but not essential
