Director, Development – National Geographic Channel

The Director will develop new entertainment-based, on-brand tv series and specials for the National Geographic Channel and its various platforms. Under the guidance of management, he/she will direct all matters related to a project’s development, including working closely with production management, legal and business affairs, finance, international regions, communications, marketing, online, ad sales, and other various National Geographic Partners’ and Society departments. The Director of Development may also take pitches from outside agencies and production companies to curate and create new entertainment programming.There is daily oversight from the manager, but ideal candidates will possess superior self-motivation and problem-solving skills. Open to someone working in LA, NYC, or D.C.

Job description:

  • Conceives, creates, researches, develops, evaluates and recommends entertainment-based, character-driven, non-fiction programming that will increase ratings performance, build awareness and support and expand the National Geographic brand. This role is the lifeblood of our internal development engine.
  • Leads effort to build a more creatively effective environment for entire development team. Examples: Conducts group brainstorm meetings that generate new show and talent ideas, introduces team to new innovations in storytelling, tracks industry news, etc.
  • Works with agents, talent executives and production companies to cast host and expert talent for numerous series, specials and stunts.
  • Participates in conventions and on panels at events such as: MIPCOM, MIPTV, RealScreen, NATPE and Science Congress. Serves as key creative “voice” to the outside production community while looking for breakout ideas, and up and coming talent. 
  • Develops ideas for new series, specials and stunts
  • Pitches new ideas to Senior Executive team for greenlight
  • Screens and casts talent for shows in development

Requirements:

  • B.A. or B.S. 
  • Minimum of 5 years specific experience working in program development or production for a network or production company.
  • Extensive knowledge of NY and LA agency community and production companies. 
  • Experience with all genres of unscripted programming preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of studio, multi-camera remote and single camera field production and post production is essential.
  • Broad knowledge and awareness of trends in both linear and streaming content platforms expected.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required. This includes experience in and ability to research ideas, write compelling treatments, and manage the creation of dynamic sizzle reels and casting tapes.
  • Must also be able to effectively give and take pitches. It is critical to possess strong presentation skills and be comfortable pitching ideas to senior team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, leadership skills, and strong analytical skills. Ability to analyze ratings and other research data to better understand our own programming and the competitive landscape.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Explorer are needed. Knowledgeable on Final Cut Pro. 
  • Demonstrated skill in developing and maintaining effective business relationships is necessary. Good organizational skills and attention to detail are required.
  • The ability to multitask and work effectively under changing priorities and daily time constraints is required.
  • Must be able to work simultaneously on multiple projects. Must be able to work under high pressure and under tight deadlines.
  • Must be a prolific consumer of unscripted content, both on linear and streaming platforms.
