Software Engineer III - OTT/Android

ESPN is looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join the application development team responsible the company’s consumer digital video applications. This engineer will work closely with ESPN product owners and business development partners to plan, design, create and maintain applications that bring ESPN’s television and video highlights to web sites, mobile phones, tablets, game consoles and set top boxes. The ideal candidate will have experience developing consumer facing Android applications and interest or experience with iOS, web development or other consumer application platforms. This position will be located in Los Angeles and will work closely with teammates in ESPN’s Bristol CT headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Core contributor to the development, enhancement and maintenance of ESPN video apps and components for a variety of platforms including Phones, Tablets, Set Top Boxes and Game Consoles.
  • Work closely with ESPN consumer product owners and app design teams to specify, design and plan the development of new applications, improvement of existing products and development of special features.
  • Collaborate with software development teams that bring ESPN’s core brands to mobile, tablet and web platforms to create feature and experience parity across platforms.
  • Collaborate with other ESPN technology teams providing fundamental pieces of the digital video ecosystem including, content APIs, video workflow, encoding & distribution and configuration management.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant professional software development experience
  • 3+ years experience developing consumer facing applications for Android.
  • 3+ years experience with at least one of the following - Java, Javascript, Objective C, C# or C++.
  • A strong understanding of XML or JSON
  • A strong understanding of HTTP and REST-style web services
  • Strong understanding of multi-tier web architectures, and OO design patterns and concepts
  • Must demonstrate solid organization/communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, team-oriented and iterative programming environment with a disposition for keeping up with latest technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building on a significant consumer app that is currently available in the marketplace
  • Experience developing applications that include audio or video content
  • Experience with agile software development practice, scrum, sprint planning, retrospectives, etc.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, engineering or it's equivalent
