Job Summary:

The Walt Disney Company’s New York Legal Affairs Department is seeking an Assistant Principal Counsel to report to the Assistant Chief Counsel, Legal Affairs, New York. This position will primarily support ABC News Studios, a long-form production unit of ABC News producing non-scripted programs and series and feature documentaries for various platforms, including Hulu, Disney+, National Geographic Channel and the ABC Television Network.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and negotiating all agreements for the client, including, without limitation, talent, production services, program license, license, distribution, releases, vendors, equipment leases, venue/location agreements, third party materials licenses, and non-disclosure/confidentiality.
  • Counseling clients regarding trademark, copyright and other intellectual property issues and providing general deal structure and legal advice.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of legal experience at a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal department.
  • Candidate must have experience drafting and negotiating various production contracts.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven client relationship skills
  • Must be team-oriented with a solution-oriented approach to legal issues
  • Self-motivated, with outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to communicate complex concepts and issues effectively with all levels and management
  • Ability to multi-task and work quickly and collaboratively under tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous in-house experience at a network, studio or media company is preferred.
  • Previous experience as a production counsel preferred

Required Education

  • JD or equivalent
  • Strong academic credentials
  • Admission to New York State Bar in good standing or willingness and qualification to be Registered In-House Counsel
