Job Summary:

The Deputy Photo Director is responsible for Co-leading a team of photo editors and managing visual storytelling across digital platforms at ABC News. A successful candidate enjoys working in a fast-paced newsroom, is calm under pressure and enjoys learning new technologies and technical skills, as well as finding just the images to tell a story.

They have strong news judgment, journalism ethics and a deep understanding of copyright law, as well as an eye for strong images. This role requires an empathetic leader with excellent communication skills and the ability to build relationships, as well as being highly organized.


Responsibilities include scheduling, handling payroll and invoicing, liaising with outside vendors, negotiating rights/usage and contracts, planning/assigning, maintaining DAMS.

The Deputy Director will help manage relationships with photo agencies, vendors and photographers, ensure compliance with copyright, usage rights and ABC News standards, as well as being part of the team curating visual stories and supporting all the editorial teams at ABC News.

You will support the director and help define the vision and standard for photography and multimedia.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8 years’ of experience as a photo editor at a news organization
  • Experience in digital publishing
  • Ability to adapt, prioritize, plan and strategize in an unpredictable news cycle
  • Project manage daily and long-term projects under a deadline
  • Work with multiple stakeholders and ensure a collaborative, collegial environment
  • Experience with tracking/managing invoices, billing and schedules
  • Negotiating rights/usage and contracts
  • An understanding of copyright law and news standards
  • Fluent with Adobe Photoshop and other photo editing software
  • Experience with DAMS and CMS publishing tools, as well as office software such as Outlook, Excel, Confluence, Trello, etc.
  • Video/multimedia experience a plus

Some nights, weekends, holidays are required.

This position is currently remote with the expectation that we will return to the office on at least a hybrid schedule.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
