Job Summary:

FiveThirtyEight is looking to hire a full-time quantitative editor. This person would help to edit articles that involve statistical analysis across all our areas of coverage, including politics, policy, sports, science and culture. The quantitative editor would also occasionally provide analysis, reporting and writing for these stories.

FiveThirtyEight is located in New York, NY, and this position requires the candidate work in the office on a regular basis.


The Quantitative Editor will be responsible for vetting methodological choices made by FiveThirtyEight reporters, and sometimes partner with them on stories that require both traditional reporting and statistical analysis. They’ll double-check the accuracy of statistical and empirical claims made in FiveThirtyEight stories before they are posted online. Depending on the skills and interests of the candidate, they might also work with Nate Silver and other members of the FiveThirtyEight team to develop FiveThirtyEight’s forecasting models in sports, politics and other areas.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience writing and/or editing in academia, journalism or a similar field.
  • Must have experience managing a heavy workload and have excellent time management skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of statistics and modeling.
  • A demonstrated ability to apply statistical training in a real-world, fast-paced context.
  • Knowledge of a broad array of topic areas pursuant to FiveThirtyEight’s mission and major verticals.
  • Reliability, creativity, and work ethic are a must

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Journalism experience, either writing or editing.
  • Published original research involving statistical analyses.
  • Demonstrated ability to build statistical models.

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.

Preferred Education

An undergraduate or graduate-level degree in journalism, statistics or related.
