Job Summary:

Disney Entertainment and ESPN Technologies is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Playback Quality Optimization team inside the Media Engineering organization.

The Playback Quality Optimization team plays a critical role in managing the media experience of our customers on Disney+ and more. Our products are embedded directly into video players and oversee media playback, making Quality of Experience decisions in real-time influencing what users see and hear. To meet both business and customer needs the team analyzes information collected about how each and every playback performs and applies those learnings to continually refine and tune every customer’s experience.

As a Senior Software Engineer, this role offers the chance to drive a high-impact, customer-facing, needle-moving project. It is ideal for someone who is excited by the opportunity to demonstrate technical leadership, steward all aspects of a codebase, has a track record of technical excellence, wants to dive deep into the mechanics of streaming video, and thrives in a highly distributed and collaborative environment.

Technologies we use include Typescript, Python (Pandas/NumPy), and Rust.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years experience in software development

  • Fluency in Typescript and the respective ecosystems

  • Track record of owning and delivering complex projects

  • Demonstrated commitment to 24/7 system reliability and availability

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Highly organized

  • Experience building and integrating client code into a larger client codebase

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent

Nice to have

  • Experience with Streaming Video Playback, including protocols like HLS

  • Developed and shipped software for consumer devices, eg mobile phones, game consoles, smart speakers, smart TVs

  • Experience developing in embedded or resource constrained environments

  • Experience with WASM, Python, Swift, or Brightscript

The hiring range for this position in Washington and New York is $142,516 to $191,180 per year, the hiring range in California is $136,036 to $199,870. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.

The hiring range for this position in Santa Monica, CA is $136,038.00 - $182,490.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
