Job Summary:

The Content Engineering team at Disney Streaming is hiring a Senior Software Engineer, Technical Lead to help build and support the metadata and artwork platform for Disney+, ESPN+, and other streaming services. Our systems are collectively responsible for integrating with the studios to bring all the metadata and artwork for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Nat Geo, and Fox content onto the Disney Streaming platform for inclusion in Disney+. This includes distributed systems that handle metadata and artwork ingest, management, discovery, curation, personalization, and syndication. Our metadata drives nearly every aspect of the user experience in Disney Streaming products.

We have an engineer-driven culture where teams are able to make their own technology choices based on the task at hand, and team members are encouraged to spend some time on professional development taking online courses, learning new technologies, working on open source or side projects, or writing blog posts. Some of the technologies currently used within Content Engineering include Java, Scala, Kotlin, Python, Javascript, Typescript, Angular, SQL, Spring Boot, ElasticSearch, Docker, and a wide array of AWS services (Lambda, ECS, S3, SQS, Kinesis, DynamoDB, Neptune, etc.).

Responsibilities:

  1. Work with a team of engineers building software in a collaborative development process
  2. Build high-performance, stable, scalable systems to be deployed in an enterprise setting
  3. Lead high-level architecture discussions and planning sessions
  4. Participate in the code review process by providing feedback on pull requests
  5. Participate in the on-call rotation, supporting systems and services during production incidents
  6. Author and provide feedback on technical proposals and root cause analyses
  7. Provide mentoring and advice for other engineers
  8. Establish engineering best practices and standards within the team to drive quality and excellence​
  9. Contribute to the DSS technical community through presentations, tech talks, and other knowledge-sharing efforts

Basic Qualifications:

  • Proficient in at least two programming languages and deep understanding of object-oriented programming

  • Experience delivering distributed systems in production environments

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience building RESTful services

  • Understanding of async programming models (events, callbacks, promises, async/await)

  • Understanding of source control concepts and exposure to Git

  • Self-learner, independent, excellent problem-solving skills

  • Experience with build and deployment technologies such as Jenkins and Docker

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical experience

Additional Information:

  • Experience with New Relic or similar application monitoring software

  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS

  • Proficient in front-end web development

  • Practical experience with functional programming
