Job Summary:

The Animal Health Laboratory Technician will provide clinical diagnostic laboratory services to our animal collection at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, The Seas with Nemo and Friends, and the TriCircle D Ranch by working to ensure the highest quality of laboratory support for patient care. We are a busy, hi-energy, team orientated practice. This position reports directly to the Veterinary Practice Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and demonstrate commitment to Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment’s Mission and Vision
  • General knowledge of clinical laboratory operations, universal precautions and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Proficient in clinical laboratory procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, use of chemical analyzers, POC analyzers, manual CBC techniques including differential analysis of mammalian, reptilian, amphibian, avian, teleost, and elasmobranchs. Prepare and perform cytologic samples. Heavy caseload of fecal parasite screening processes involving flotations and McMasters testing. Other lab testing in-house
  • Establish and systematize documentation for all testing performed in-house and with outside lab partners; reference laboratories and universities
  • Familiar with computerized medical record keeping
  • Ensure inventory of laboratory supplies
  • Operates, maintains, trouble shoots, and validates laboratory equipment by performing quality control checks, reagent upkeep, materials, and consumables
  • Help manage the Biobank sample storage and archive process
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in testing, training, safety, and quality. Desire to advance the practices’ scope
  • Partner across disciplines for sample management, requests, and research
  • Strong organizational skills and careful attention to detail
  • Applicant must be able to work independently as well as work in partnership with veterinary technicians, veterinarians, medical records team, pathology team, and animal care teams in day to day operation
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written, E-Mail, and oral formats
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize work demands and good use of time management
  • Work with the Veterinary Practice Manager to development, evaluate, revise, and review operating procedures, protocols, and processes
  • Participate in the requirements for accreditation through AZA
  • Ensure the laboratory is “show ready” and provide back stage tours and interact with guests
  • Actively participate in accomplishing goals set by the Animal Health and the Veterinary Practice Manager

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in laboratory diagnostics
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
  • Familiarity with basic Windows programs
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic, fast-paced, large team setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience interacting with public and good public speaking skills
  • Zoological institution experience
