Sr Software Engineer, Connected Devices

Job Summary:

As a (Senior) Software Engineer for the Connected Devices, Browser Based Device and Set-top Box Research and Development Team, you will help us push the boundaries of what is possible on some of the most interesting 10-foot devices in the marketplace. You’ll be part of an advance scouting team where you’ll be in uncharted territory exploring the latest connected and living room devices on the market.

With the widely varying nature of these devices we are looking for two distinct skill-sets and have opportunities for engineers with either background:

JavaScript

On the JavaScript side we’re looking for someone that is proficient at writing highly optimized JavaScript (ES5 & ES6) with a low memory footprint, appreciates the details that make the development lifecycle exceptional, and demonstrates enthusiasm for new technologies, languages, frameworks, and platforms.

C/C++ and Embedded Systems Experience

On the C/C++ side we’re looking for an engineer who's proficient at C/C++ in a set-top box and embedded systems world, with experience writing cross platform code, porting applications and runtimes across multiple hardware platforms, and has an attention to detail that goes deep in uncovering the nuances of set-top box hardware to optimize our application experiences.

Responsibilities:

JavaScript

Be a critical member of a team of engineers responsible for exploring and testing the feasibility of running our JavaScript based apps on new platforms and hardware.

  • Work with hardware manufacturing partners to vet new hardware and devices.

  • Maintain a strong understanding of our client application code base (written in ES6 and React) to identify, research and address issues as they arise on new devices.

  • Test and assess our internal video player on new hardware and devices. Explore DRM capabilities and ability to access MSE/EME from the platform provided browser stack.

  • Collaborate with client application development teams, services engineering teams and product to help understand and explain device limitations and requirements.

C/C++

Be a critical member of a team of engineers responsible for exploring and testing the feasibility of running our JavaScript based apps on new platforms and hardware.

  • Work with hardware manufacturing partners to vet new hardware and devices.

  • Maintain a strong understanding of our native client platform (written in C/C++) to identify, research and address issues as they arise on new devices.

  • Test and assess our internal video player on new hardware and devices. Explore DRM capabilities and ability to access OS and driver level decoding and decryption on various devices.

  • Collaborate with client application development teams, services engineering teams and product to help understand and explain device limitations and requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

JavaScript

  • 3 - 5 years of experience building compelling web applications.

  • Experience with and ability to communicate multiple different software architectures (MVC, MVVM, Redux, etc.) and application design patterns.

  • Strong experience in JavaScript (ES6) app development, both with and without third party frameworks.

  • Senior level candidates will have experience mentoring junior level team members.

C/C++

  • 3 - 5 years of C/C++ experience on embedded system or writing portable mulit-platform code

  • Understanding of chip architectures and what features they support

  • Experience using build runners / compilation tools for multi-platform projects

  • Senior level candidates will have experience mentoring junior level team members.

Recommended Qualifications:

JavaScript

  • Experience building JavaScript or native apps for Smart TV’s such as Samsung

  • Orsay and Tizen, LG Netcast and WebOS, Sony, Panasonic, TiVo, Vizio, and various set-top boxes or blu-ray players.

  • WebGL or Canvas.

  • Google Chromecast.

  • JavaScript DevOps tooling and test frameworks including Gulp, WebPack, Jenkins, Mocha, and PhantomJS.

  • React.js experience a plus.

  • HTML5 video including MSE and EME.

  • Video streaming technologies including HLS and DRM.

  • C/C++ experience, specifically on connected device hardware a plus.

C/C++

  • React Native

  • OpenGL/EGL

  • Cross device/distro dependency management

  • GStreamer

  • Webkit, WPE, Chromium, Cobalt.

  • OpenEmbedded

  • DRM/CDM

  • Familiarity with .Net / Xamarin runtimes
