- This role is considered hybrid, which means the employee will work a portion of their time on-site from a Company designated location and the remainder of their time remotely. A remote opportunity may be possible for qualified candidates under certain circumstances and, if granted, the employee would work remotely on an ongoing basis.

Job Summary:

Are you a recent graduate looking to get your foot in the door of the exciting world of VFX, but not sure where to start? ILM’s Jedi Academy may be just the thing for you!
 

Offered as an eight-week placement to recent graduates or artists with one to two years of VFX experience, the Jedi Academy provides the opportunity for graduates to learn from highly skilled Layout Supervisors and Senior artists. Come join The Force and train to accurately recreate the set, camera moves, and actor performances to allow for seamless effects integration as well as learning a variety of workflows and software for some of the biggest movies and television series in the world.


In this paid experience, successful applicants will be placed into the Layout discipline. Padawan artists will provide entry-level support to the team while gaining experience in a fast-paced and highly collaborative live production environment through training, mentorship, and the development of real shot-work. To top it off, graduates who successfully complete the Jedi Academy may be offered a Junior Artist position within the studio.
 

We are looking for artists who reflect the creative talent and passion for great filmmaking that defines ILM.
 

What You’ll Do


Working in a “remote-first” fast-paced production environment, the Jedi Academy artists will work closely with more senior artists and may be tasked to perform the following:

  • Produce high quality entry-level shot work for camera tracking, character matching (matchanim), solving lens distortion, creative camera work and deformation matching of surfaces
  • Replicate completed projects’ shots to learn about Layout’s all encompassing skills sets
  • Complete work within the timeframe bid
  • Strengthen professional habits, including best practices for presenting work in dailies, working as a team, and communicating effectively
  • Gain knowledge and appreciation of ILM’s culture and history


What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Graphics, Fine Arts, Design or Photography, or related; OR experience working in the industry
  • Demonstrated ability in one or more CG techniques relevant to the layout discipline including camera tracking, object and character matchanimating, animation and motion capture cleanup
  • Understanding of photography and the effects of different lenses used in a variety of scenarios
  • Strong personal work that represents artist skills and interest in VFX
  • Strong teamwork, excellent communication and interdisciplinary thinking
  • Interest in and ability to quickly pick up new software
  • Entry-level knowledge in some or all of the following software packages: Maya, PFTrack, 3dEqualizer and Nuke; comparable software experience considered
  • Nice to have:
  • Knowledge of Linux, Houdini
  • Coding/Scripting knowledge (Python, Mel) a plus


Job Requirements


Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States and must provide proof of long-term eligibility. We do not provide assistance for optional practical training (OPT) or work authorization visas for the Jedi Academy.
 

Applicants must have graduated from a relevant course within the last 12 months or have one to two years of VFX experience.
