The Lifecycle Engineering Organization builds platforms and experiences pertaining to communication with our customers. We are crafting our in-app capabilities across all services (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, STAR+) and platform types (mobile, web, TV).
We are hiring a Principal Software Engineer who is responsible for in-app messaging on Android. Our goal is to facilitate sending messages to users regarding their account, payment, new features, events, and of course, extraordinary content. We are creating flexible and dynamic canvasses on Android phones, tablets, and TVs, allowing internal teams to deploy a variety of messages as needed.
In this role, you will collaborate multi-functionally with teams including Engineering (e.g. Android development), Product Management, Design, Marketing, Data, and more to help shape the vision for our messaging engine. You will also own converting that vision into reality via sophisticated technical architecture, choice of technology & implementation. Responsibilities
Architect & build reliable, performant user experiences for deployment in multiple Android applications.
Make decisions about choice of technology & scalable frameworks to meet the product vision.
Work with a distributed team of engineers building software in a collaborative development process.
Participate in on-call rotation, supporting systems and services during production incidents
Test your work to build confidence before shipping.
Cultivate positive relationships with engineering and multi-functional partners, especially those outside of our own organization.
Mentor junior developers and form a team culture of visibility, ownership, and collaboration.
Contribute meaningful feedback to the rest of the development team and be open to receiving feedback.
Basic Qualifications
10+ years of experience working in a Software Engineering role
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related degree, or equivalent work experience
Experience building messaging/communications applications that are broadly available
Understanding of core Android SDK concepts such as Activity and Fragment lifecycles, thread management, plus some experience with:
Kotlin
RxJava / reactive coding
Dependency injection systems like Dagger / Hilt
Understanding of A/B experimentation principles and practices
Experience working collaboratively across development, UX, product, marketing, and more
Experience using design tools for development purposes (such as Figma and Sketch)
Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with backend-driven layouts for client screens (our server will provide layout descriptions that the client engine will need to interpret)
Worked across multiple platforms including AndroidTV, FireTV, or use of other Android platform SDKs
Knowledge of standard processes for metrics collection
Experience working with localization or internationalization
The hiring range for this position in California is $180,646 to $242,330 per year and in New York is $189,256 to $253,880 per year and in Washington is $189,256 to $253,880 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
