Platform Software Engineering is responsible for the core technical platforms and systems for Disney’s extensive suite of streaming products – including Disney+ and Hulu – and digital products and experiences – including ESPN, Marvel, Disney Studios, NatGeo, and ABC News. This team also drives the strategic development and use of technology, building scalable systems and products that can power a more personalized experience for Disney customers, as well as innovative work in Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and 3D rendering in our studio environments. What you'll do

  • Design core, backend software components for the Image Service Platform

  • Collaborate with other Image Service engineers and external engineering teams to evaluate and design appropriate solutions to effectively meet Product requirements

  • Build and run code in AWS using Terraform, K8s, Spinnaker, and other CI/CD tools

  • Evaluate new or existing technologies and products for implementation, considering costs, usability, compatibility and scalability

  • Create user documentation and runbooks for reference and reporting purposes

  • Use a mix of technologies including Scala, Java, Python, Kafka, Kinesis,

  • DynamoDB, MySQL and an array of AWS native services

  • Collaborate with other team members (including product owners, TPMs, and other collaborators) to achieve product and business requirements

  • Conduct design and code reviews

  • Analyze and improve efficiency, scalability, and stability of various system resources

What to bring

  • 5 + years of shown experience building internet-scale API or services applications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering

  • Experience in a Scala and alternative JVM application development environments (Java/Kotlin)

  • Familiarity with the AWS environment, including ECS (Docker), S3, EC2, Lambda, CloudWatch

  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code such as Terraform, CloudFormation

  • Understanding of software development fundamentals

  • Familiarity with writing unit, integration and functional tests

  • Familiarity integrating with service APIs and/or SDKs

  • Understanding of agile processes software team with version control & project management tools (e.g. Github, SVN, Jira, Basecamp)

  • Creative and inventive problem solving

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a team-focused approach towards software development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Java, Python

  • Knowledge of these database solutions, DynamoDB, MySQL/Aurora, Redis Elasticache, MongoDB, Cassandra

  • Experience building scalable, fault-tolerant, high-uptime systems

The hiring range for this position in San Francisco is $149,000 to $199,800 per year, in Seattle is $142,600 to $191,100 per year and in Santa Monica is $136,000 to $182,400 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
