Job Summary:

The Disney Media Engineering’s Content Management Platform is responsible for the end-to-end technology needed to acquire content from over 500 partners and deliver the highest quality video to hundreds of millions of users. We’re changing the world of streaming video and looking for a talented Principal Software Engineer who will be an exceptional addition to our team. As part of the team you are a key contributor in driving the technical architecture, implementation and improvement of services that manage rights and availabilities across the combined catalog that makes up Disney+, Hulu and more.

You should be invested in iterative improvement on the software systems, domain stack and data organization to empower agile and continuous development while also maintaining high system availability and reliability. You would use technologies like Django/Python, Springboot/Java, MySQL, Postgres, AWS native resources (Kinesis, DynamoDB, S3, SNS, SQS etc), and Kafka.

***This position is on-site 4 days a week in Santa Monica, CA

Basic Qualifications

  • Set technical direction, strategy and drive technology adoption within the Catalog domain; participate in architectural review and be responsible for the Rights and Availabilities of the Content Catalog across Disney+, Hulu and more
  • Lead designs of well-architected solutions and build iteratively while maintaining agile best practices
  • Build data-driven software application systems based on business scenarios
  • Lead through metrics – understand application performance & costs, and push for better results
  • Drive best engineering practices to write well-constructed and easy to maintain code, defensive and robust tests
  • Challenge current architectural choices while collaborating to solve problems in innovative new ways
  • Take responsibility for quality delivery – keep an eye on how launches & build outs are progressing, and steer direction when needed

Utilize technologies Django/Python, Springboot/Java, MySQL, Postgres, AWS native resources (Kinesis, DynamoDB, S3, SNS, SQS etc), and Kafka

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related field and 10 years of progressive experience in a software development occupation. This must include:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 10 years of software development experience and proficiency in Java, Python, or similar
  • Ability to articulate a plan for and implement improving changes on a production system while in parallel adding new features towards the teams initiatives
  • 6 years of experience with core Computer Science fundamentals, including Object-Oriented programming, data structures and algorithms (hashing, trees, graphs, search, etc.)
  • 6 years of experience with relational (SQL based) and non-relational database (DynamoDB, Elasticache) technologies, and messaging technologies (Kinesis, Kafka, SQS, SNS)
  • Experience with data modeling and simplifying data across multiple sources into a normalized format for driving distinct user experiences

The hiring range for this position in Santa Monica, CA is $180,646 to $242,330 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
