- This role is considered hybrid, which means the employee will work a portion of their time on-site from a Company designated location and the remainder of their time remotely.

Job Summary:

Media Engineering builds the software and systems that prepare media content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform - providing the best possible playback experience to our viewers. We handle audio, video, and metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization, processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback across our stack.

We’re changing the world of streaming video and looking for a talented Senior Software Engineer who will be an exceptional addition to our team. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Extended Metadata team you are a key contributor in driving the technical architecture, implementation and improvement of services that manage all extended metadata such as artwork, sports, people, tags across millions of titles delivered to hundreds of millions of viewers for Disney+, Hulu and Star+. You will be expected to work cross-functionally with product, operations, project management and upstream and downstream engineering teams to align on our designs for new and extensible models and features. This role is open to Santa Monica, San Francisco, New York, Seattle or Remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of content management applications and services. 

  • Write well-constructed and easy to maintain code and robust tests utilizing best engineering practices 

  • Improve performance, scalability, and availability of systems

  • Take a rotating on-call shift to provide active on call support Services both during work hours and off hours

  • Communicate status with peers and/or managers and present views and opinions respectfully. 

  • Collaborate to tackle problems in innovative and efficient new ways

  • Positively contribute to the team and company culture by engaging with teammates and making the team a fun place to work

Required Education

  • BS or MS in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of relevant software engineering experience

  • Minimum 2 years of software development experience and proficiency in Java and Spring Boot

  • Expertise with core Computer Science fundamentals, including Object-Oriented programming, data structures and algorithms 

  • Fundamental understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases including ACID and CAP, horizontally distributed computing, eventual consistency, messaging queues like Kinesis, Kafka and SNS, and search indexes like Elasticsearch.

  • An enjoyment for going deep on performance tuning and a love of owning a problem end-to-end

  • A desire to relentlessly dive into problems and improve systems

  • Experience building systems in the Cloud (AWS)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and building machine learning models and services

  • Experience using continuous integration and deployment with regression, load and stress testing
