Department Overview:
Media Engineering builds the software and systems that prepare media
content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform - providing the best
possible playback experience to our viewers. We handle audio, video, and
metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization,
processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a
scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to
measure, control, and optimize playback across our stack.
Job Summary:
We’re changing the world of streaming video and looking for a talented Software Engineer who will be an exceptional addition to our team. The Disney Media Engineering’s Alternative Content team is responsible for services & UIs that manage playback of promotional media, partner pre-rolls & tune in content, and ad placement opportunity curation across Disney’s worldwide and multi-platform streaming footprint. As an engineer on the team, you are key in building technical solutions and collaborating with other members of the team.
You should be invested in iterative improvement on the software systems, domain stack and data organization to empower agile and continuous development while also maintaining high system availability and reliability. You would use technologies like Django/Python, Springboot/Java, MySQL, Postgres, AWS native resources (Kinesis, DynamoDB, S3, SNS, SQS etc), and Kafka.
Responsibilities and Duties of Role:
- Align with best engineering practices to write well-constructed and easy to maintain code, defensive and robust tests
- Take responsibility for quality delivery – keep an eye on how launches & build outs are progressing, and steer direction when needed
- Utilize technologies like Springboot/Java, MySQL, Postgres, and AWS native resources (Kinesis, DynamoDB, S3, SNS, SQS etc) to build data-driven software applications based on business direction
- Take a user-centric approach to improving our content management systems, tools, and workflows
- Identify areas from improvements in our systems and workflows
Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
3 years of software development experience and proficiency in Java, including knowledge of frame
Experience with
Deep understanding of computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms (hashing, trees, graphs, search, etc.)
3 years of experience with relational (SQL based) and non-relational database (DynamoDB, Elasticache) technologies, and messaging technologies (Kinesis, Kafka, SQS, SNS)

The hiring range for this position in Santa Monica, CA is $112,586 to $151,030 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
