The Senior Editor for ESPN Australia is an experienced digital media manager who supervises all content, planning and execution for ESPN’s digital presences in both Australia & New Zealand. You will closely work with partners in advertising, sales and marketing to drive ESPN’s digital businesses in these regions.


The position will have direct oversight of all content (text, video, audio and social media) produced in these regions and will be expected to display outstanding news judgment, skilled storytelling ability, thorough knowledge of digital practices (including SEO, social platforms and content sharing), great planning & communication skills and a strong knowledge of journalistic principals and methods.

You will also manage and direct Deputy and Associate Editors, writers, photographers and videographers to develop and maintain the year-round and event-specific content offering for the website, and for cross-platform and departmental distribution.

This is a management position, requiring regular, daily communication with teams across multiple continents and time zones. Strong organizational and managerial skills, and overall editorial vision, are all a must.

You will be is responsible for:
  • Meeting and exceeding traffic goals for all content and sections, as set by the Lead Editor. (US based)
  • Working in conjunction with the Lead Editor in the year-round creative development of original and assigned written, photo and video content -- from conception and pitching, scripting, producing, line and copy editing, photo editing, color correcting, publishing and QAing – based on breaking news, an event calendar and existing and developing franchise offerings.
  • Shaping the agenda for the weekly and event-specific editorial staff meetings, sending out the weekly sports content budget to a global internal distribution list, sending out programming notes for weekend and on-call editors.
  • Daily programming of the index pages and assistance programming the headline news stack, including working nights, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Coordinating coverage of breaking news to ensure timeliness and accuracy, understanding protocol for reporting legal news and death, identifying news stories of national interest to pitch to the front page.
  • Leading a team and coordinating multifaceted event coverage across platforms.
  • Formally presenting content initiatives to small and large internal groups, via in-person meetings, video conferencing, webex or conference calls.
  • Working in conjunction with the Lead Editor & Video Group to determine the overall video content offering across sports and across the monthly editorial calendar, including volume, tone, duration of clips and availability of resources.
  • Working against an annual PNL and meeting quarterly with Finance to identify budgetary expenditures, tracking invoices for freelance talent and coordinating with the group controller to make sure talent payments are processed on time.
  • Conceiving and pitching sales features and promotional elements in alliance with the Sales group.
  • Writing and editing multiple stories at a time: breaking news using AP Style, editing features for context, tone and relevance, writing snappy and concise headline and subhead copy.
  • Controlling the flow and transmission of sports content and assets across departments and platforms; optimizing all content for internal and external search.

Basic Qualifications

You will be a sports expert who excels in ideation for both the mainstream and endemic audiences and who conceives and researches daily news coverage, multimedia feature content, service information and scalable event coverage to be spread across multiple platforms (TV, digital, Mobile, social). You will be a technically savvy consumer of digital media who has a strong knowledge of the Australian & Global markets, including sports such as Cricket, NBA, Football, AFL, NRL, rugby, boxing, golf, tennis, auto racing and other popular American sports.
  • Fluency in web authoring tools, social media, video, SEO and software: CMS, Photoshop, basic HTML, FTP clients, video & photo editing, Mac and PC operating systems. Fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet. Digital news journalism experience and news judgment; understands assigned sports from a journalistic point of view, and for a mainstream audience. Understands the taste of the ESPN audiences.
  • Experience managing writers, editors and an overall editorial department.
  • Strong English grammar and excellent organizational skills. Excellent news reporting, writing and editing skills.
  • Experience managing budgets and working to monetize content through work with business partners, including advertising and marketing.
  • Unparalleled knowledge of the Australia markets.
  • Must be willing to travel, both domestically and internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8 to10-plus years of editorial and reporting experience.
  • Experience managing a digital news operation and editorial team.

Preferred Education

  • Bachelors degree or higher preferred in Journalism, Communications or a related field.
