The Deputy Director of Podcasts is a leader who sets the tone and tenor of National Geographic's flagship and award-winning podcast Overheard and is a visionary in thinking about where to take our audio business next. The ideal candidate is journalistically rigorous, incredibly creative, and a born problem solver.


  • Lead a team of producers and editors; and manages their workflow;
  • Develops producer, editor, and host talent;
  • Leads weekly pitch meetings; greenlights episodes of Oveheard;
  • Researches, pitches, and develops new audio formats and products;
  • Serves as touchpoint for podcast business at National Geographic, communicating with the Senior Leadership, Communications, Product, Marketing, Insights and Analytics, and Live Events teams; and third-party distribution partners;
  • Manage sound designer and sound engineer; work with operations team on on contracts, releases, invoices.


  • At least 8 years of experience in producing audio;
  • At least 3 years of management experience, with experience coaching junior producers;
  • Strong research and journalism skills; experience reporting science, environment, and social science stories; superior knowledge of the podcast industry, writ large;
  • Proven ability to communicate up; excellent communication skills;
  • Experience setting and managing budgets;
  • Excellent skills in ProTools audio editing software;
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent; MA preferred, ideally in journalism and/or the sciences.
