The Video Producer is responsible for the development and production of short-form explainer content for National Geographic Media. The Producer must have the ability to identify, develop, and produce compelling episodic narratives that align with National Geographic’s brand and editorial focus on science, history, and animals. Under the supervision of the Director of Video, the Producer will collaborate with National Geographic’s editorial staff to develop episodes, and to craft a fast-paced, contemporary series. The position requires collaboration with other team members as well as managing freelancers.


Research and Development:

  • Research and pitch new ideas for series, and individual episodes.
  • Collaborate with editorial teams (Animals, History, Science) to source ideas.
  • Brainstorm creative visual approaches for series.


  • Collaborate with editorial teams and oversee video editor and AP.
  • Ensure production meets established review and delivery deadlines.
  • Ensure production is on budget.
  • Ensure editorial and visual consistency across the series.
  • Identify and pre-interview external experts to identify the best voices to tell the story.
  • Work with writer on the script.
  • Direct voiceover talent during recording sessions.
  • Field produce location and studio shoots (conduct interviews, direct b-roll), and secure personal, materials, and location permits.

Post Production:

  • Post-produce with editor.
  • Translate executive review notes to make changes.


  • Media management; provide tech-deliverables for projects; and manage and ensure completion of all legal deliverables.


  • Ability to collaborate with editorial staff to identify stories and develop pitches.
  • Well-defined editorial voice.
  • Keen eye for motion graphic design and a strong visual sensibility.
  • Oversee editor and AP; manage freelance DPs, graphic artists, and writers; negotiate stakeholder priorities.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, AfterEffects, Media Encoder, Illustrator).
  • Highly organized; ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with the ability to exercise independent judgement.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience managing deliverables and legal paperwork.
  • Ability to analyze and apply data to develop more effective storytelling.
  • At least 5 years of professional video production experience; previous work on explainer content a plus.
