What You Will Do

The Senior Software Engineer will independently manage various media and workflow projects for ABC News. Responsibilities include gathering user requirements from end users, building front-end and back-end solutions with various internal and vendor provided software, testing workflow solutions, thoroughly documenting code or scripting, and making iterative improvements as needed. This role also involves handling DevOps on AWS/Azure as needed.

Projects will focus on news-specific media production and newsgathering tools, either vendor or internally developed software and solutions. These initiatives are critical to ABC News's ability to cover news creatively, process media, produce show content, and optimize delivery and processing of News content. The role is part of a collaborative team within the news division and may require occasional weekend or night work based on the news cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Gather requirements from end-users and determine the most effective solution

  • Design, build and test software solutions to meet the needs determined for each project

  • As needed, develop full-stack software solutions utilizing modern languages and frameworks, including but not limited to JavaScript, NodeJS, JQuery, Socket.IO, React, CSS/HTML, Python etc.

  • Pro-actively contribute to, and/or maintain, a shared backlog and update stories as needed

  • Document scripts, code, security requirements and project wireframes as they are being built

  • Ensure continued functionality of applications, processes, and systems post-launch

  • Act as a training resource and subject matter expert for Support & Sustainment teams

  • Innovate and bring new perspectives on optimizing existing software solutions

  • Stay up-to-date and informed on the latest tech trends that can impact news technical solutions.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 5 – 7 years of experience in software engineering, preferably some of which were spent on media production projects

  • JavaScript, NodeJS, React, CSS/HTML, Python, SQL

  • Experience utilizing APIs and microservices to build inter-connected solutions

  • Experience building applications on AWS infrastructure, including utilizing Serverless Frameworks

  • Knowledge of broadcast and file-based video codecs and FFmpeg tools

  • In-depth Knowledge of media orchestration tools and BPM workflow solutions

  • User research and UI/UX design experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Software engineering experience for video TV/Video production and/or News.

  • Experience working on video MAM/PAM system, live streaming and/or live production systems.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.


The hiring range for this position in New York is $145,400 to $195,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
