Job Summary:

As a Senior Product Software Engineer on the News Web Squad, you will be part of a team focused on building and maintaining the web sites for ABC News and the eight ABC Owned and Operated Television Stations. We surface personalized video, tally election results, and keep local audiences connected to breaking news in their communities. We work alongside engineers from ESPN and Disney's entertainment brands to support each other's products and share solutions. Our team uses modern server-side and web technologies such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Node and React to deliver scalable and elegant solutions for new product features and core site architecture.

If you:

  • Employ a flexible attitude and can work constructively in a diverse team setting

  • Are passionate about web development

  • Value learning and being exposed to new experiences

  • Demonstrate determination in finding solutions to complex puzzles

  • Have the curiosity to research and learn new technologies

  • Care about bringing people closer to their world …then working at Disney is unlike anything else.

We have the latest technology, game-changing ideas, and world-class talent. Come be a part of our team and help us find new ways to interact with users, however and wherever they connect with our brands.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Build and ship product-level features for ABC News and the ABC OTV station sites

  • Build solutions for problems of sizeable scope and complexity

  • Develop specifications and technical designs for new features, refactors, and architectural improvements

  • Contribute to the evolution of our engineering practices by recommending improvements to development, coding, maintenance, and system standards as you spot opportunities

  • Review code from peers for design, testability, and usability; raise the bar on what "done" looks like across the team

  • Identify opportunities to improve our systems, products, and services with each iteration: propose investments in tooling, performance, accessibility, observability, or developer experience and lead the work to deliver them

  • Influence and drive software engineering best practices within the team, working independently with minimal guidance and exercising judgment in selecting methods and techniques

  • Serve as a "go-to" technical resource for less experienced engineers. Mentor through code reviews, design discussions, on-call rotations, and 1:1 guidance

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional software engineering experience.

  • Extensive experience with TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Node.js, and modern front-end web development technologies and best practices.

  • Proven ability to own products and features throughout the full software development lifecycle, from design and implementation through deployment and ongoing support.

  • Experience designing, building, and delivering scalable features and applications that support high-traffic environments.

  • Strong commitment to software quality, including automated testing, code reviews, and continuous improvement of engineering standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and develop solutions for complex technical challenges.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail.

  • Highly motivated, self-directed, and results-oriented with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership throughout the successful delivery of complex projects.

  • Proven experience building and scaling consumer-facing web applications that serve large and diverse user bases.

  • Experience integrating with content management systems (CMS) and content delivery pipelines.

  • Familiarity with A/B testing, experimentation frameworks, and data-driven decision-making practices.

  • Experience developing personalized user experiences, recommendation engines, and feed-driven interfaces.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction, drive architectural improvements, and contribute to long-term engineering strategy.

  • Experience optimizing application performance, scalability, and overall user experience.

Experience with:
