The successful candidate for this Assistant General Counsel position will be a member and integral part of Disney’s Employment, Immigration and Health and  Safety Legal team, and will be the primary legal support for all workplace health and safety matters affecting the entire Disney enterprise across our corporate functions and our business segments of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products; ESPN; and Disney Entertainment (including Disney Live Action, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Walt Disney Animation, Pixar, ABC, Hulu and Disney+). This will include advising and supporting internal business partners and workplace health and safety professionals, team members, including Employee Relations and Human Resources professionals and liaising with Company lawyers across the Disney enterprise, as necessary. 
 

This person will be responsible for strategizing and developing state of the art compliance-related safety policies and procedures, conducting and/or directing workplace health and safety-related training and participating in risk assessments to ensure that the Company identifies and mitigates workplace health and safety risks. Reporting directly to the head of-legal for Employee Benefits/Executive Compensation/Health and Safety, this person will frequently interface directly with leadership across business and functional teams, working closely with key, cross-functional stakeholders. 
 

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize expertise, creativity, and judgement to avoid and, when necessary, resolve disputes.

  • Compliance with OSHA, CAL/OSHA, and all other federal and state safety regulations.

  • Defense and appeal of OSHA and Cal/OSHA citations.

  • Conduct or advise others on the conduct of workplace investigations.

  • Conduct or advise others on workplace safety audits.

  • Illness/injury prevention and other workplace safety-related programs.

  • Provide direction on the investigation of certain whistleblower complaints.

  • Counsel internal clients on a vast array of workplace safety matters.

  • Draft responses to OSHA, Cal/OSHA; WorkSafeBC and similar governmental agency claims and demand letters.

  • Supervise the drafting of and revise OSHA, Cal/OSHA, WorkSafeBC and other administrative charge responses and represent the company in administrative proceedings.

  • Evaluate current and anticipate future legislative trends in all areas of workplace safety.

  • Develop corporate initiatives to keep pace with developments of law, regulations, and corporate policy.

  • Build partnerships with business and functional stakeholders to ensure alignment between compliance and business strategies.

  • Work with partners across the company to enhance training programs.

  • Educate and instill workplace safety principles in our clients during every interaction.

  • Inspire and motivate others to be a best-in-class company for workplace safety.

  • Expertise in state and federal environmental laws and regulations is a plus. 


Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant experience.

  • Concentration in and enthusiasm for workplace safety legal advice and counseling.

  • Ability to spot and analyze complex issues and devise practical strategies and solutions.

  • Superior written and oral communication skills.

  • Superior drafting, negotiating and persuasive skills.

  • Superior interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with co-workers at all levels.

  • Strong experience managing key stakeholders.

  • A flexible and adaptable approach for responding to shifting priorities and a rapidly evolving external environment.


Required Education:

  • JD or equivalent from an accredited law school

  • Membership in the California State Bar in good standing or willingness and qualification to be Registered In-House Counsel

The hiring range for this position in California is $229,100.00 - $307,200.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
