The Copy Editor reviews books, magazines, comics, and promotional materials at all stages, from manuscript to proof.
The Copy Editor will report to the Copy Chief.
This is a Full-Time role.
What You Will Do:
- Copyedits short manuscripts (readers, picture books, chapter books, short stories, magazines, comics) and longer manuscripts (middle grade and young adult novels, coffee table books) to ensure sense, continuity, quality of grammar, spelling, and style, and accuracy and consistency of text and art.
- Creates style sheets for series and longer books.
- Performs proofreading at all book stages to check that changes and corrections have been executed as requested. Copyedits new material created at later stages, such as added or rewritten text, captions, and indexes.
- Identifies and communicates bookmaking problems and further corrections needed.
- Reviews jackets, covers, and promotional materials.
- Fact-checks information such as dates, names, and quotations.
- Checks specifications against company database.
- Consults with managing editors, editors, and designers.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in Copy Editing or in a related field
- Exceptional copyediting and proofreading skills, as well as proficiency in editing with electronic tools, such as Microsoft Word Track Changes and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Exacting attention to detail, commitment to follow-up, and diplomatic communication skills.
- Ability to focus under pressure of tight deadlines and to juggle multiple projects with flexibility.
- In-depth knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition and comfort working with a house style and individual franchise guidelines and nomenclature.
- College-level understanding of literature, grammar, style, and spelling.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Book publishing copyediting experience preferred; experience with or affinity for children’s books and/or Disney properties highly desirable.
Education:
- Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience required
