About The Role
As a Science Programs Specialist focusing on The Seas with Nemo and Friends, you will be part of the dynamic and innovative Science Operations team where we are part of a broader mission to Lead Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to Care for animals and the environment, Connect people to nature and Conserve our natural resources. In this role, you will contribute to multidisciplinary scientific projects in support of the Seas Science Operations team’s strategic plans. The Science team is a dynamic team consisting of experts from multiple disciplines focused on behavior, endocrinology, cognition, behavioral husbandry, population biology, environmental monitoring and welfare that contribute to the care and welfare of animals living across Disney’s parks and resorts.
In this on-site seasonal role, you will report to the Science Operations Manager.
What You Will Do
- Lead and coordinate applied research projects with an emphasis on animal care and welfare topics through data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Collaborate with both internal and external partners to identify, prioritize, and conduct applied management and technical projects to support operational and industry needs.
- Serve on the Science Operations Team Leadership team, leading by example with an innovative and growth mindset that emphasizes the generation of novel ideas and solution-oriented approaches to operational challenges.
- Share project findings externally in presentation and publication formats.
- Help create and deliver quality guest experiences that showcase the Science team’s contributions to evidence-based animal care at Disney and for the broader zoo and aquarium industry.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience publishing in peer reviewed scientific journals.
- Demonstrated experience presenting scientific work to different audiences.
- Demonstrated experience conducting applied animal welfare focused research in an aquarium or zoo setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency in designing research projects, including statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate well in both written and oral formats.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a larger team with diverse stakeholders.
- Minimum availability of two days a week with potential to cover Saturdays and Sundays if needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least five years of experience working for a zoological institution.
- Experience conducting research with more than one taxonomic group of animals.
- Experience in automated image and video analysis.
- Experience teaching university level courses.
Required Education
- Advanced (MSc or PhD) degree in Biology/Marine Biology/Zoology/Animal Science or related field.
