Artisan, Colour Design/Paint (1-year contract)

Job Summary:

The role of the Artisan is to support design, document and implement creative intent in the areas of Colour Design, Rockwork, character facades, and/or figure finishes. He or she will be taking the direction from the Principal Artisan to create themed finishes that fulfil creative design intent. Design documentation (colour boards, samples, models, etc) developed by the Artisan is used to describe and illustrate the Color Design, Rockwork, Character Facades, and/or figure finishes intent for bidding and construction purposes.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with other disciplines including Creative Director to develop design intent for area of specialty through an understanding of the story intent, placemaking or atmosphere. Research history, geography, geology, or architecture as needed
  • Implement strategies relating to area of specialty in Color Design
  • Prepare project close-out documentation
  • Supervise contractors/vendors during production & installation
  • Provide support as necessary models, color boards, sample production, mock-ups, staging efforts, vendor liaison, and scenery production
  • Able to mix paint colours to match palettes and/or theme paint samples as directed by Principal Artisan for Colour Design specialty
  • Ensure the colour design intent is achieved by successfully integrating design with allied disciplines, such as architecture, lighting, graphics and showset
  • Address construction bid period questions, review submittals and respond to and resolve field issues and questions

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in theater, fine arts or environmental design.
  • Minimum 6 years of professional theme painting and design experience with WDI or within the discipline of themed design/attraction
  • Ability to mix paint to match commercial swatches, paint (architectural renderings, 3D models, props, scenery) and perform faux finishes on a variety of surfaces, have familiarity with the tools of the trade, understand architectural drawings, and take verbal direction from team members and implement it. Black light painting skills are a plus.
  • Ability to understand various paint system and corresponding characteristic.
  • A practical understanding of color theory and proven Color Design skills are required
  • Must have the ability to perform tasks from ladders, scaffold, or mobile life equipment.
  • Demonstrated thoughtful design, artistic skills and professional judgment in problem solving
  • Good knowledge and hands-on experience with computer systems and software such as SketchUp, Adobe illustrator and/or Macromedia Freehand, Adobe PhotoShop, basic scanning and printing software, Microsoft Office products—Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Independent problem-solver with strong collaboration and communication skills
