Job Summary:

Working in the Media Technology Center, the Senior Manager of News Acquisition will lead all facets of live media acquisition technology. This leader will collaborate with SMEs in field operations, workflow, streaming and post. The Senior Manager will manage a team of employees responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and executing video feeds via IP, satellite, and fiber in and out of ABC News facilities.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage a team of approximately 20 staff and freelance employees in a 24/7 department often involved in breaking news coverage. 
  • Work with editorial and operations leadership of all ABC News programs and platforms to assess and support live broadcast needs. 
  • Develop video workflows in preparation for relocation to a new facility. 
  • Plan and execute transmission for complex remotes and special projects. 
  • Collaborate with production and field teams for planned major events and breaking news.  
  • Assist in developing operational workflows to enhance productivity in support of increased programming goals. 
  • Work with workflow, engineering and field teams to develop best workflows, latest technology. 
  • Book and facilitate live and tape transmissions for all ABC News productions, including tracking these orders in internal transmission systems. 
  • Route video as appropriate to monitor feeds, Quality Control and provide signals to other parts of the business. 
  • Coordinate feeds with newsgathering, control rooms, ingest, master control facilities, bureaus, show operations and live streaming operations. 
  • Communicate with programs, platforms, field crews and control rooms via various modes including but not restricted to intercoms, slack, teams, IFB. 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in live transmission coordination and/or control room operations. 
  • Minimum 8 years of experience working news productions/operations. 
  • Must be team oriented and able to solve problems in time-sensitive situations. 
  • Ability to work harmoniously and proactively with production teams having diverse work cultures. 
  • Must be flexible in hours and days.  Weekend work will be required either in the office or on a “on call” basis, depending on needs. 
  • Operate and troubleshoot systems that execute IP transmissions using TVU, LiveU, Haivision and other related software. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 8 years of experience working in news production/operations. 
  • Experience with video encoders/decoders. 
  • Experience with IP networking, cell bonding and SRT. 
  • Experience with satellite transmissions for news production. 
  • Experience with broadcast ingest and routing. 
  • Managing a union and non-union workforce and maintaining knowledge of collective bargaining agreements. 

Required Education: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.

The hiring range for this position in New York, NY is $114,500 to $157,400 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
