Reporting to the Head of Puppets and the Company Manager or Producer’s representative, the Puppets Swing Technician will be responsible for supporting the safe, consistent, and professional operation of puppets and related elements throughout rehearsals and performances.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting with puppet and mask fittings, rehearsals, and performances as required.
- Applying prop and puppet-making skills to support the maintenance, repair, and preparation of puppets and related items.
- Sourcing materials and supplies for the Puppets Department as required.
- Ensuring all duties and tracks are consistent and in accordance with rehearsal and training standards.
- Conducting pre-show checks and ongoing maintenance of puppets to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Liaising closely with Stage Management and other technical departments to ensure all cues and designated tracks are executed safely and as rehearsed.
- Immediately reporting any safety, equipment, or operational concerns to the Head of Puppets, Company Management, and/or the Technical Director.
- Complying with all venue rules, safety procedures, and Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) requirements at all times.
- Attending production meetings, rehearsals, and calls as reasonably required.
- Contributing to a professional, collaborative, inclusive, and respectful working environment.
Ideal experience:
The ideal candidate for a Puppets Swing Technician on The Lion King is a skilled and dependable theatre professional with strong craftsperson-ship, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced live performance environment. Puppet and/or props-making skills are essential, along with experience in repair, maintenance, and backstage technical work. They combine practical technical ability with a deep respect for puppetry artistry, working collaboratively to ensure the puppets remain performance-ready while maintaining the highest artistic and professional standards expected of a first-class musical.
