Overview:
Reporting into Chief Regional Counsel, APAC, this role of Assistant Regional Counsel, (Vice President level equivalent) is a senior lead role, oversees and supports the Disney Legal and Global Affairs function in Korea.
Leading a team of 6, in which 5 direct reports in legal function, including Principal Counsel, Counsels and etc. and 1 dotted report in Public Policy, the role of Assistant Regional Counsel acts as a trusted advisor to local management team, supporting all Disney lines of business in Korea, including D+, Studio, Content production and Consumer Products.
Job Summary:
A senior position supporting Disney+, Studio (including all theatrical distribution), Production & Acquisition of local content, Consumer Products and Content licensing. The team also handles all corporate work and consumer facing marketing, competitions as well as a wide range of commercial contracts. The role also provides compliance, antitrust and policy and privacy support, working with regional, local and global specialists within Disney.
The role is a key part of the Korean management team working closely with business leaders in the Territory and APAC functional leaders.
The role will require interpretation of relevant global policies in relation to the market and an ability to develop local policies and process. A high level of judgement is required and an ability to think strategically and use legal and in-depth market knowledge to help the business management team make strategic decisions and set the tone for how risk is managed.
The position serves as a model of collaboration for others influencing the direction of the Legal and Global Affairs team. It requires a collaborative relationship with other departments within the business and with external organizations.
Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:
- Provision of general commercial advice including contract, consumer and corporate law advice. Knowledge of competition law, data privacy and antitrust law helpful.
- Work on government affairs issues and support of all areas within scope including policy development.
- Management of any litigation, issues or risk areas impacting the business.
- Liaise with local media authorities on the application and compliance of local laws and regulations and educate the business accordingly.
- Advise the business on appropriate processes to manage risk and contract commercially.
- Excellent review, drafting and negotiating skills.
- Drive a ‘continuous improvement’ culture with the business, ensuring processes, policies and procedures sufficiently protect the business from current and future risk.
- Collaborate with business/functional leaders on creative solutions to complex operational challenges. Establishes collaborative relationships with other subject matters expert teams within the business or external organizations.
- Support senior executives and heads of business lines.
Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:
- 12+ years of experience in a Law Firm and/or in house Legal department in Korea with significant hands-on experience ideally in media or related areas.
- Admitted to practice law in Korea although US and other English-speaking jurisdictions considered. Knowledge of Korean law is a requirement.
- Good understanding of local regulatory landscape.
- Understanding of the legal and business customs and practices of a US-based multinational enterprise.
- A proven leader and manager in setting direction and achieving objectives. Keen analytical insight and strong legal capability.
- Exceptional organizational, prioritization and time management skills with the ability to work under deadlines and execute efficiently against multiple high priority projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to evaluate and reconcile issues from the business unit and enterprise level perspective and to work in an environment with a high degree of confidentiality.
- A strong team lead and able to interact well in a matrix structure, with colleagues of a diverse cultural backgrounds and work styles.
- Ability to analyze problems effectively and take action to resolve issues. Must demonstrate flexibility in response to rapidly developing environment.
- Ability to concisely convey complex issues and offer recommendations and risk analysis. Must be proactive.
- Strong communication skills (written and spoken). Fluency in English and Korean essential.
