Your role?
As CG Supervisor, you will be working alongside Producers and Discipline Leadership to ensure all delivered shots maintain the group’s rigorous technical standards and support the creative vision of the Director by directing the artists’ work, technical skills, organization and communication. Ideally you have seen multiple feature length or episodic projects from start to finish and looking to do so again here. However, if this would be a step forward in your career and you have worked in the VFX industry for several years, ILM would still love to hear from you!
What will you be doing?
You will be crewed to a show (or multiple smaller shows when needed) and own all decisions related to that show's technical development and implementation requirements including workflow, tool and pipeline decisions
You will ensure the show is properly equipped to realize the vision of the VFX Supervisor within the amount of time and with the resources provided by the Producer.
As CG Supe you are the Technology Leadership for the show. The CG Supe works with the Production and local Resource Manager to forecast, and assess material resources for the show like disk space, procs, software licenses, new artist machines, and other similar resources when needed. The CG Supe is the technical leader of all discipline departments on the show, and in charge of all cross-departmental workflows. The CG Supe trusts their per-discipline Supes and experts on the show, but are the final deciders on what’s best for the overall pipeline and workflow for the show.
Responsible for troubleshooting all pipeline issues, including rendering, baketakes, slowness, publishes, and caching.
Work closely with all other studio CG Supes to ensure pipeline and workflow parity between the rest of the global team.
Along with the Lighting, Gen and FX Supes, responsible for estimating the disc space and rendering resources needed on the show.
Identify technical problems, bottlenecks and other workflow issues across disciplines and collaborate with supervisors and production to solve them.
Collaborate with VFX Supervisor and VFX Producer as a part of the Leadership team to ensure the pipeline solutions support the creative and budgetary constraints of the show.
Runs daily Atlas Check with the other 3D Supervisors.
Provides technical advice to the VFX Supervisors regarding how best to achieve the aesthetic requirements in an efficient manner while maintaining the highest visual standard.
To be a contributing member of this team, you will have a mix of these skills:
Working knowledge of Linux, Python and shell scripting required.
Ability to work with energy and enthusiasm within a team environment.
Have the ability to engage in the creative process without ego, and accept all final decisions with a positive and encouraging attitude.
An eye toward anticipating potential problems and knowing exactly what could look better in one’s shot and an excellent knowledge of how to use the tools to achieve the desired look.
Enjoys problem solving and takes the initiative to drive ideas and suggestions.
Have the ability to prioritise tasks whilst managing your time very well, providing everyone with accurate time estimates on shot task completion.
The desire to coach and mentor more junior level artists and lead others on huge shots or small sequences.
Set a standard for all Technical Directors in continually raising the bar for speed, quality of work and adaptability.
Look dev and/or shader writing a plus, layout and matchmove a plus.
Familiarity with Maya, Katana, Zeno and Nuke is a big plus
You may or may not have Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Graphics (or equiv. experience)
Ideally 5+ years hands-on production experience.
